REPORT FOR ANALYTICAL CHEMISTS their opportunities for recognition and advancement are improved. An added benefit is t h a t with a larger analytical group, a greater flexibility is possible in assigning personnel. PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT Several years ago and well ahead of the recent reorganization,

Esso established a policy providing equal opportunity for progress on the research side as well as on the management side. The advantage of the recent re organization, particularly for ana lytical chemists, is t h a t it created an analytical division. The di vision and its personnel are both oriented to analytical methods and

techniques and not to a particular area of research. This division, made up of personnel formerly dis persed among several research di visions, is large and the personnel have a better opportunity to ob tain a variety of experience and to develop their special aptitudes. I t is also easier under this arrange ment for supervisors to spot prom ising men for promotion by either route. Another advantage of the re organization has been evident in technical recruiting. Company officials are finding it easier to ob tain the analytical chemists they want. The dual ladder of progression at Esso is set forth in the table:
