AKLY T H I S MONTH, t h e General Chemical Division of
Allied Chemical & D y e opened its new $2 million labora t o r y a t Morris Township, N . J., for research in industrial, scientific, a n d agricultural chemical fields. T h e new facility, adjacent to t h e c o m p a n y ' s central research labora tory, is reported t o be one of t h e m o s t extensive a n d com pletely equipped industrial laboratories in t h e N e w York area. I t replaces t h e division's Laurel Hill, L. Ι., Ν . Υ., laboratory, which was one of t h e first major chemical research centers in t h e country. T h e new building, a three-story L-shaped structure, provides over 55,000 square feet of floor space and includes more t h a n 30 separate laboratories. I n addition, there is a technical library, engineering research offices, a n d a n agricultural formulating a n d milling room. T h e large analytical section contains t h e m o s t m o d e r n spectrographic, optical, a n d physical testing e q u i p m e n t available. An i m p o r t a n t share of t h e l a b o r a t o r y ' s work will be devoted t o research on Genetron organic fluorine com pounds. P a r t s of t h e laboratory h a v e been especially de signed a n d equipped for conducting intensive studies of these products, used in refrigeration, air conditioning, aerosols, a n d plastics. T h e research center will also b e concerned with product a n d process development on m a n y of t h e c o m p a n y ' s basic industrial chemicals, such a s sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, a l u m i n u m sulfate, phosphates, a n d sodium compounds. Special research is also being conducted in connection with t h e c o m p a n y ' s Baker & Adamson r e agents a n d fine chemicals, a s well as agricultural chemicals, including m a n y of t h e newer organic insecticides, fungi cides, a n d herbicides. H e a d e d b y J. H . Pearson, a m e m b e r of t h e General Chemical research staff for t h e p a s t 18 years, t h e labora t o r y will coordinate its activities with related phases of t h e p a r e n t c o m p a n y ' s central research program. I t will also work closely with other General Chemical laboratories in B a t o n Rouge, L a . , a n d M a r c u s Hook, P a . W i t h t h e completion of this latest research center, every division of Allied h a s now a d d e d new research laboratories within t h e p a s t decade. VOLUME
