LETTERS T O T H E EDITOR Restricted Professionals DEAR SIR:
Some years a g o the Government required that chemists i n the lower w a g e brackets be paid for overtime. Recently other criteria have been established and t h e basis for overtime payments lias been extended. I cannot agree with Mr. Frankel (C&EN, May 1, page 1 4 5 5 ) that these serve as protective measures to our profession. My definition of a professional chemist is one w h o enjoys chemistry and w h o h a s an adequate training i n this field. I b e lieve I am right when I say that t h e recent graduate is far more conscious of being a professional than one w h o is s o thoroughly established in his work that he has no time to think on these things. It has been my observation that young chemists like to go into the laboratory week ends or evenings to do things which they cannot d o with a clear conscience during regular hours. T h e time w a s when this could be d o n e without difficulty. N o w accurate time records must b e kept and as a general rule these are automatically interpreted by the pay department in regard to normal and overtime payments. There may b e here iin
