analytical chemists at meetings the question arises as to how many analytical chemists receive their Ph.D. degrees each year. The "guesstimates" vary widely. Now, thanks to National Scien tific Foundation support of a study by the National Research Council, we have some answers to these and related questions. The NRC report is entitled "The Science Doctorates of 1958 and 1Θ59—Their Numbers, Characteristics, and Employment" (Government Printing Office, Wash ington 25, D. C , 28 pages, 25 cents). The number of science doctorates awarded in 1959 reached an all-time high of more than 5300, continuing the general upward trend of the last decade, (7% a year). Chemistry was the largest single discipline with 1062 doctorates. It should be noted, however, that for the past decade, Ph.D.'s in chemistry, unlike most fields, followed a general downward trend which reversed sharply up ward in 1959. Chemistry was fol lowed by psychology (811), engi neering (705), physics (522), and mathematics (301). The chemistry group is broken down into 8 categories. These are given for both 1958 and 1959. organic physical inorganic analytical agricultural and food chemistry (general) pharmaceutical chemistry (other) Totals

About 75% of the 1958-59 Ph.D.'s in the physical sciences had definite job commitments at gradu ation time. One in four planned to return to his predoctoral post.
