Increasing Efficiency Of Air Conditioning Equipment IN AIR CONDITIONING equipment water is used both for Heat transfer in the cooling system and for "-washing" the circulat ing air. "Where slime-forming bacteria are present in. the water supply, as is most likely in the case of any untreated "water, slime deposits will collect on the coils in the cooling system and form an insulating coating. This "will decidedly increase the cost of operation and at the same time effectively cut down the effi ciency of the system. Even "when treated water is used, slime formation may occur in recirculated water. The mechanical re moval of such slime is inconvenient and will have to be repeated periodically.

In the section of the air conditioning equipment where the air is "washed," slime will accixmulate and choke the noz zles of the sprays, greatly impeding the washing action. Such slime deposits, moreover, are extremely difficult to re move by any purely mechanical means. Here again the most economical and ef fective method for removing such ac cumulations, and preventing their recur rence, is by chlorinating the water sup ply. A decided advantage resulting from chlorination i s that it permits the recir culation of water, "with less bleeding in of fresh water,

By chlorinating the water, however, be fore it is admitted to the air conditioning equipment, slime-forming bacteria will be entirely destroyed so there "will be no coatings on the coils. If the air condition ing equipment has been in use and coat ings have already been formed, the chlorination will remove them and restore the original heat transfer efficiency.

Elimination of Odors Slime not only reduces the operating ef ficiency of air conditioning equipment, but may produce disagreeable odors in the circulating air. The elimination of such odors i s another advantage of chlorination.
