GUIDE FOR AUTHORS T h e Journal of Chemical Documentation invites n e w ( n o t p r e v i o u s l y p u b ­ lished) a n d original c o n t r i b u t i o n s which, if a c c e p t e d , a r e n o t t o b e p u b l i s h e d elsewhere. S u g g e s t i o n s b y a u t h o r s w i t h respect t o referees for their m a n u ­ scripts will b e a p p r e c i a t e d . M a n u s c r i p t s should be s u b m i t t e d in triplicate a n d t y p e w r i t t e n d o u b l e s p a c e d o n s u b s t a n t i a l p a p e r ; good, clean copies m a d e b y a p e r m a n e n t dupli­ c a t i o n process a r e a c c e p t a b l e . C o n s u l t a r e c e n t issue of t h e J o u r n a l for general style. Titles should tell a c c u r a t e l y a n d clearly w h a t t h e p a p e r is a b o u t , in t e r m s of m a x i m u m specificity. A n i n f o r m a t i v e a b s t r a c t of 3 t o 4 sentences is r e q u i r e d ; it should s u m m a r i z e t h e principal findings. Only r e l e v a n t d a t a should be included in t h e t e x t , a n d e q u a t i o n s , figures, a n d t a b l e s should be e m p l o y e d where t h e y c o n t r i b u t e t o c l a r i t y a n d conciseness. Reference t o t h e " H a n d b o o k for A u t h o r s of P a p e r s in t h e J o u r n a l s of t h e A m e r i c a n C h e m i c a l S o c i e t y " is r e c o m m e n d e d . Nomenclature should conform w i t h A m e r i c a n usage a s exemplified by C H E M I C A L A B S T R A C T S . Tables s h o u l d be n u m b e r e d consecutively w i t h A r a b i c n u m e r a l s a n d should b e included a t t h e p r o p e r places in t h e m a n u s c r i p t . C o m p u t e r p r i n t o u t s m a y be e m p l o y e d only w h e n t h e y a r e of high c o n t r a s t a n d n o t t o o large for s u i t a b l e p h o t o r e d u c t i o n . Structural formulas should be used a s economically a s is consistent w i t h c l a r i t y . C o m p l e x formulas should be p r e p a r e d a s i l l u s t r a t i o n s . Illustrations t h a t c a n be r e p r o d u c e d b y m e a n s of line c u t s a r e pre­ ferred, a l t h o u g h halftone r e p r o d u c t i o n c a n be u n d e r t a k e n from highc o n t r a s t , glossy p h o t o g r a p h s (8 χ 10 inches). L i n e d r a w i n g s m u s t b e carefully p r e p a r e d ; freehand w o r k is n o t s u i t a b l e a n d will n o t be r e d r a w n by t h e J o u r n a l . D r a w i n g s should be d o n e w i t h I n d i a ink o n w h i t e d r a w i n g p a p e r , blue t r a c i n g cloth, or blue-lined c o o r d i n a t e p a p e r , t w o or t h r e e times t h e size desired in t h e c u t . I t m u s t b e r e m e m b e r e d t h a t n u m b e r s a n d letters o n t h e d r a w i n g or in t h e m a r g i n s will also b e r e d u c e d in size; t y p i n g is therefore u n s u i t a b l e . G r a p h s should b e p r e p a r e d so t h a t t h e " c u r v e s " a n d t h e m a r g i n s a r e h e a v i e r lines t h a n c o o r d i n a t e lines, w h i c h should n o t b e closer t o g e t h e r t h a n 10 m m . P o i n t s on c u r v e s should be t r u e circles, s q u a r e s , or triangles large e n o u g h for t h e necessary r e d u c t i o n . F o r m u l a s a n d legends s h o u l d n o t b e d r a w n on t h e g r a p h s . T h e n u m e r i c a l d e s i g n a t i o n (Arabic) of t h e figure a n d t h e legend should be t y p e d on a s e p a r a t e sheet of p a p e r or p r i n t e d on t h e b a c k of t h e d r a w i n g . I n t h e former case, w r i t e or p r i n t t h e figure n u m b e r o n t h e b a c k of t h e d r a w i n g . P h o t o g r a p h i c copies of d r a w i n g s a r e s u i t a b l e if t h e y a r e clear, highc o n t r a s t , preferably glossy p r i n t s . O r d i n a r y p h o t o c o p i e s a r e u n s a t i s f a c t o r y .

Literature citations should be numbered in t h e text as superscripts ( w i t h o u t p a r e n t h e s e s ) . F o o t n o t e s citing w h e r e a n d w h e n t h e p a p e r w a s p r e s e n t e d s h o u l d b e m a r k e d w i t h a n asterisk, a n d c h a n g e of a d d r e s s of a n a u t h o r w i t h a dagger. O t h e r f o o t n o t e s s h o u l d b e assigned s u p e r s c r i p t n u m b e r s , a s for l i t e r a t u r e c i t a t i o n s . C i t a t i o n s preferably should be p l a c e d a t t h e e n d of t h e p a p e r a n d preferably listed in a l p h a b e t i c a l order b y t h e first a u t h o r .
