Materials Handling Show Emphasizes Cost Reduction Freight car for bulk shipment of dry chemicals means savings in containers, dunnage, and labor P H I L A D E L P H I A . - T h e fifth national Materials Handling Exposition this year had a total of 3 4 0 exhibitors displaying an even larger description of equipment than previous shows of this kind. T h e exhibits, valued at $10 million, were housed in the Convention Hall here May 18 to 2 2 . They ranged from box cars to tiny self-tapping screws, covered six acres, and necessitated alteratio ? in the hall to accommodate the exposition. There were a number of new or improved loading and handling devices of interest to chemicals and the process -chemical industries. General American Transportation, Chicago, showed a new type of freight car for the bulk shipment of dry chemicals which is said to effect savings in containers and labor, and at the same time provide better sanitation and lessened contamination hazards. The benefits are obtained through the introduction of an air stream into the car, through a fabric stretched over a steel channel. Air forced through the fabric aerates the shipment with freer flow during unloading. Conveyors. Rapids-Standard, Grand Rapids, displayed gravity conveyors at reduced costs. of Floor-Veyor and Rapid-Roller was said to speed u p delivery of heavy cans and cartons of paint b y being fed off a section of the roller conveyor to a 48-ft. floor conveyor. The paint containers leave the floor conveyor on the second floor, and the roller gravity conveyor takes the cartons and cans to storage areas along the line. The flow system is easily reversed. Similar materials flow equipment was explained for wholesale and retail paint and varnish, and pharmaceutical establishments. Belt Corp., Orient, Ohio, displayed a small parts conveyor which takes small bags, cans, and cartons that will pass up a 6-in. wide trough. Stacking Equipment. Palleting and stacking equipment was one of the exposition features. A stacker able to operate in aisles only 6 ft. wide and which can tier goods 11 ft. high was shown b y Automatic Transportation, Chicago. The same exhibitor is also offering, for the first time, a gasoline-powered truck with electric transmission. Pallets with nails clinched through plugged holes to lessen maintenance of wood pallets were exhibited by Clinch-Tite Pallet, of Boston. frame and clamped into position with a spring lock. T h e rubber swinging door also has arrived to speed up materials handling. Such doors for an industrial plant displayed by Stic-Klip Mfg., Cambridge, may b e butted by truck or merchandise without damage. Mobile power units are taking on increased utility and ease of operation. Shown for the first time were a series of floor trucks which may b e assembled by the user and altered to meet changing needs. They are being introduced by Leebaw Mfg., Youngstown. Allis-Chalmers, Milwaukee, had what was said to be the world's largest tractor on display. It weighs 41,000 lb. and packs 175 hp. net. Fork Lift Trucks. Fork lift trucks made in England were shown here for the first time by R. H. Corbett, N e w York. They are designed for use in narrow aisles. Gerlinger Carrier, Dallas, Ore., has a new group of fork lift trucks of 106-in. wheelbase and lift capacities of from four to eight tons. Barrett-Cravens, Chicago, featured a lift truck with a platform which rises 12Vs ft, allowing maintenance work 19 ft. above floor level. Yale and Towne Mfg., Philadelphia,. displayed initially the n e w Yale Warehouser, an electric rider straddle truck for narrow aisle work. It features a fully articulated dual caster wheel supported on two tapered roller bearings. Yale took over the entire stage at the Convention Hall with a five-part show given over to equipment, merchandising, service, training, and manufacturing. A T V camera picked up the doings for those w h o could not get on the stage. A feature was the whole Yale Materials Handling Road Show, which is making a 25,000mile tour of the nation. Said Yale's vice president, Elmer F . Twyman: "Because of the intensification of the buyer's market, everyone in the business of making and selling goods and services is now faced with the absolute need of producing at competitive costs so that competitive selling prices can b e met." Others displaying at the exposition emphasized the part that materials handling is playing in reducing costs in business. Engines. Ford Motor, Dearborn, Mich., announced Ford 143, a four-cylinder, over-head valve to its series of industrial heavy-duty engines. Star-Kimble showed an adjustable, varying speed gear motor with many possibilities for conveyor applications. Austin-Western, Aurora, 111., took the wraps from its n e w indoor-outdoor crane which combines the services of crawler, truck, and erection cranes with those of shop cranes. T h e Terraload of American Tractor, Churubusco, Ind., digs trenches and grades as a bulldozer, and carries loads from one site to another. Specialized handling, packaging, and shipping equipment was in evidence on two floors of the show. A powered floor jack by Moto-Truc, Cleveland, lifts a truck weighing up to 25,000 lb. with ease. Fairhanks Co., New York, has a new combination stepladder and hand truck. A device 2335
MATERIALS HANDLING which prints shipping and product identification labels in one operation on gummed stock was displayed by Weber Addressing Machine, Mt. Prospect, 111. Magline, Inc., Pinconning, Mich., is the manufacturer of a magnesium hand truck weighing 19 lb. Largest customer is the Post Office Department. Algene Marking Equipment had in operation its conveyor-marker which can b e fitted on any gravity conveyor or sealing machine. Packages are marked and counted in one operation.

Solids Feeder Delivers Up to 3000 Pounds p e r Minute The Richardson Scale Co. Las developed a solids feeder that delivers an uninterrupted flow of material to processing equipment at constant rates up to 3000lb. per minute. Products handled include feeds, grains, limestone, and dry, free-flowing chemicals. In operation, the feeder receives material through a large inlet opening. Product drops onto conveyor belt The belt carries the product past a regulating gate, over a scale mechanism and out a discharge opening at the bottom of the feeder. This feeder comes in two models. One model has a 9-inch stream width and will handle from 75 to 1500 lb. per minute; the other has an 18-inch stream -width and will handle from 150 to 8000 lb. per minute. H1

Applied Engineering Co. is producing the Cunningham Scale Seal, a device that fits over standard models of weighing scales, protecting them from foreign matter and corrosion. The device features a patented liquid seal. The sealing flange is fixed continuously around underside of the moving platform, thus effecting an airtight seal. The flange is at all times protruding into the liquid channel and is always free from contact with anything except the liquid. The column and head of scalers are also completely enclosed. An access door and windows provide a means for making weight settings and readings. The entire device is designed as a "take-down" model to permit inspection of scales as required by some state laws.
