T h e s y m p o s i u m consisted o f four half-day sessions w i t h four lectures per session and a t w o - p a r t poster session w i t h 15 poster papers. T h i s b o o k includes chapters by the lecturers plus five papers contributed by the session chairs. A l l contributions were refereed a n o n y m o u s l y a c c o r d i n g to usual procedures of the A C S S y m p o s i u m Series. T h i s v o l u m e appears w i t h a short time l a g because o f the cooperation of the participants. Fifteen o f the lecturers and both o u t - o f - t o w n session chairs brought their manuscripts to the s y m p o s i u m .
