Morrison named Analytical's new editor The board of directors of the American Chemical Society has appointed George H. Morrison editor of Analytical Chemistry. Morrison will assume his editorial duties starting with the January 1980 issue of the journal. He succeeds Herbert A. Laitinen, who has served since 1966. Morrison is professor of chemistry at Cornell University (1961 to present). From 1961 to 1978 he served as director of the analytical facility of Cornell Materials Science Center. An internationally recognized leader in the field of trace analysis and materials characterization, Morrison, over the past 35 years, has made numerous important contributions to the techniques of ion microprobe-ion microscopy, spark source mass spectrometry, activation analysis, atomic spectroscopy, and solvent extraction. He has contributed much to the development of these techniques and has applied them with considerable success to the analysis of semiconductors, phosphors, metals and alloys, and biological, lunar, geological, and environmental materials. He has been a pioneer in extending trace analysis to the part-per-billion level. In 1942 Morrison received his B.A. in chemistry from Brooklyn College. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1948 from Princeton University,
where he studied with the late Prof. N. Howell Furman. Before joining Cornell University he was head of inorganic and analytical chemistry at the General Telephone & Electronics Labs, Bayside, N.Y. (1951-61). His earlier experience was with the Atomic Energy Commission's New Brunswick Laboratory, Rutgers University, and with the U.S. Army Manhattan Project at Princeton University. Morrison has received a number of prestigious awards, including the 1971 ACS Award in Analytical
Chemistry, the 1975 Medal of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (New York Section), and the 1977 Benedetti-Pichler Award of the American Microchemical Society. In 1967-68 he was awarded an NSF senior postdoctoral fellowship for research in cosmochemistry at the University of California, San Diego, and in 1969 was selected by NASA as a principal investigator on the Apollo Lunar Analysis Program. He was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1974-75 for ion microprobe research at the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, Université de Paris-Sud, Orsay, France. Morrison is currently a member of the division committee on analytical chemistry of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. He was chairman of the ACS Analytical Division in 1973. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Analytical Chemistry, Analytica Chimica Acta, the Analyst, Analusis (France), Microchimica Acta, Separations Science, and Talanta. Morrison has more than 170 publications and four patents to his credit in the fields of ultratrace analysis, ion microprobe analysis, mass spectrometry, atomic spectroscopy, and nuclear and cosmochemistry. He is coauthor with H. Freiser of "Solvent Extraction in Analytical Chemistry," and is editor of "Trace Analysis: Physical Methods." D
Nominations requested for 1981 ACS officials
Philadelphia Section sponsors symposium Loren Johnson of the Food & Drug Administration (left), moderator Sam Gusman of the Conservation Foundation (center), and Ed Kimmelman of Du Pont were among the panelists representing industry and government in a one-day symposium on chemistry and government regulation held by the ACS Philadelphia Section. The symposium, which featured a round-table discussion among the participants, was sponsored by the section's continuing education committee.
At its meeting to be held in Washington, D.C., in September, the Committee on Nominations & Elections will select four possible nominees for 1981 president-elect, four nominees for director-at-large (1981-83), and potential nominees for regional director (1981-83) from Regions II and IV. At the ensuing spring meeting, the ACS Council will nominate two persons for president-elect. Election by the membership will occur in the fall of 1980. The council will elect two directors-at-large by mail ballot in fall 1980. Nominees for regional director will be selected by vote of the regional councilors in the spring of 1980, and one director for each region will be elected by the members of the region in fall 1980. Journal study seeks reader responses A task force set up by the society Committee on Publications' Sub committee on Journals Monitoring is conducting a study on the effective ness of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Colloids (applied aspects) continues to be published under that title, but publications on the macromolecular aspects of emulsions, gels, latexes and other forms of colloidal dispersions and the uses of colloidal dispersions in coat ings, elastomers, and plastics that formerly were covered in it now are covered in a separate bulletin entitled Colloids (Macromolecular Aspects). Each biweekly publication in the CA Selects series contains the com plete Chemical Abstracts abstracts and citations for recent papers, pat ents, and other publications on a specific chemical or chemical engi neering topic. Peter Debye award reinstated At its regular June meeting the ACS Board of Directors accepted the offer of Du Pont to sponsor the Peter Debye Award in Physical Chemistry. First presentation under Du Pont sponsorship will occur in 1981. The Peter Debye Award was es tablished in 1960 "to encourage and reward outstanding research in physical chemistry." It was presented yearly from 1962 to 1976, inclusive, under sponsorship of Humble Oil & Refining Co. and Exxon Chemical Co. U.S.A. Nominations for the 1981 award will be solicited this fall in the campaign for nominations for all ACS awards. D
