General design requirements for high vacuum line systems appropriate for use in synthetic organometal lic chemistry are presented. Specific design consid erations impacting on pumping station construction, vacuum gauge selection and specialty vacuum line fea tures are then developed and discussed in relation to the modular, greaseless single and double manifold vacuum line systems which we have successfully con structed and used in our own laboratory.

The concept of 'vacuum' is difficult to define for a general audi ence. Depending on the scientist and the experiment, the same term is interchangeably used to denote pressures as high as several hundred torr and as low as 10~ torr. Therefore, in writing a review article on vacuum line designs and techniques, i t is prudent to acknowledge the co-existing meanings of the central concept and to define i t carefully at the outset. This article confines i t s e l f to a discussion of the vacuum regime normally understood by synthet ic organometallic chemists to encompass the high vacuum range extending from ca. 10 - 10~* torr. However, in the discussion of roughing systems and Schlenk line designs, medium vacuum ranges (10" - 10~ torr) w i l l also be considered. 10

OVERVIEW This review describes modular greaseless vacuum line systems which we have constructed in our laboratory for the synthesis and manipu lation of air and moisture sensitive organometallic compounds. The discussion of these systems reviews important features of vacuum L

GENERAL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY I n c o n s t r u c t i n g our systems, we have been i n f l u e n c e d by s e v e r a l overarching design considerations. We have b u i l t systems which are: 1 . ) COMPACT. T h i s f e a t u r e a l l o w s the l i n e s t o be assembled and m a n i p u l a t i o n s to be conducted e n t i r e l y w i t h i n a fumehood thus p r o t e c t i n g the l a b o r a t o r y environment and the r e s e a r c h e r from noxious c h e m i c a l s and i m p l o s i o n / e x p l o s i o n hazards. 2. ) MODULAR. In c o n t r a s t to the e l e g a n t permanent vacuum l i n e i n s t a l l a t i o n s d e s c r i b e d by Burger and Bercaw, we p r e f e r our m a n i f o l d s t o f u n c t i o n as h i g h vacuum templates upon which s p e c i a l t y apparatus i s c o n s t r u c t e d on an 'as needed basis. 3 . ) LOW MAINTENANCE. The systems are d e s i g n e d t o be g r e a s e free, thereby eliminating the t e d i o u s r e g r e a s i n g and regrinding of stopcocks associated with traditional vacuum l i n e systems. Two types o f d i f f u s i o n pumps are commonly employed i n h i g h vacuum pumping s t a t i o n s . They are the mercury d i f f u s i o n pump and the o i l d i f f u s i o n pump. When first installed in a vacuum system, flexible tubing requires substantial pumping to completely desorb moisture and other contaminants from its high surface area. Desorption may be speeded by wrapping the piece with heating tape and baking

In our experience, Kalrez O-rings do not have the same mechanical resiliency as Viton. Therefore, a l l Kalrez O-rings should be periodically checked to assure that the size and structural integrity of the O-ring remains intact.

Giving Labs the Dry Look: Greaseless Double Manifolds and Schlenkware

Downloaded by UNIV OF MICHIGAN ANN ARBOR on February 18, 2015 | http://pubs.acs.org Publication Date: November 24, 1987 | doi: 10.1021/bk-1987-0357.ch005

Manipulations of a i r - and water-sensitive compounds are accomplished easily using double manifolds and Schlenk-type glassware, such as the Ace-Burlitch Inert Atmosphere system and No-Air Labware. While these systems have proven performance and r e l i a b i l i t y , the advent of new materials and devices allows improvement of the basic AceBurlitch system to a system which is completely greaseless and truly high vacuum. The greaseless double manifold (Figure 1) is based on the Louwers Hapert two-way high vacuum stopcock (12 mm bore, Aldrich #Z11,293-3). The unique (to my knowledge) configuration of this two-way high vacuum stopcock enables one, with ca. four quick turns of the wrist, to switch between a high vacuum manifold and a pressurized gas manifold. The "O" ring seals on the valve plunger assure true high vacuum (10-6 mm Hg) performance, allow super-ambient (15 psig) gas manifold pressures, and make for a low-maintenance, easily cleaned double-manifold. My double manifold has the two-way valves angled at 45° to make the "O" ring seals (your indication of the valve position) easily v i s i b l e . Also used are Ace high-vacuum "O" ring valves (Ace #8194) which connect (1) the double manifold to the purified gas supply, (2) the vacuum manifold to the solvent trap, and (3) the vacuum manifold to a thermocouple gauge. One end of each of the manifolds is equipped with a "0" ring sealed Teflon plug screwed into Ace-threads (Ace #5846 and #7644) to give access to a bottle brush for cleaning the manifolds. The two manifolds, via the two-way valves, connect to an assembly comprising a 14/35 "0" ring joint (Ace #7648) and a 3 mm high vacuum valve (Ace #8192) which connects to a mercury bubbler. Schlenk-type glassware is connected to the system either by direct connection to the #14/35 "0" ring inner joint or by connection via butyl rubber tubing. Note that the double-manifold does contain one vestigial greased connection - the ball-and-socket joint connecting the vacuum manifold to the trap is greased. I have found that the "0" ring ball joints do not make good high vacuum seals with a ground glass socket, however, the stress reduction afforded by a flexible ball-and-socket joint reduces breakage during assembly and disassembly. 0097-6156/87/0357-0136$06.00/0 © 1987 American Chemical Society
