TESTS Assay and n-Butyl Alcohol Analyze the sample by gas chromatography using the general parameters cited in [Part 2: Chromatography; Recommended Procedures; Gas Chromatography]. Type I, methyl silicone Measure the area under all peaks, and calculate the area percent for n-butyl acetate and n-butyl alcohol. Correct for water content.

Color (APHA) [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Color (APHA); Procedure for Color (APHA)].

Residue after Evaporation [Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Residue after Evaporation]. Evaporate 100 g (114 mL) to dryness in a tared, preconditioned dish on a hot plate (~100 °C), and dry the residue at 105 °C for 30 min.

Titrable Acid Neutralize 25 mL of reagent alcohol, to which 0.05 mL of bromthymol blue indicator solution has been added, with 0.01 N sodium hydroxide to a blue-green color. Add 25 g (28 mL) of the sample, mix, and titrate with 0.01 N sodium hydroxide to the same color. Not more than 4.0 mL of 0.01 N sodium hydroxide should be required.

Substances Darkened by Sulfuric Acid Cool 5 mL of the sample to below 10 °C. Cautiously add, dropwise, 5 mL of 95.0 ± 0.5% sulfuric acid. The color of the solution should not exceed that of a color standard composed of 9 volumes of water plus one volume of a color standard containing 3.25 g of cobalt chloride hexahydrate, 2.25 g of ferric chloride hexahydrate, and 3 mL of hydrochloric acid per 100 mL of solution.

Water [Part 2: Titrimetric Methods; Water by the Karl Fischer Method; Volumetric Procedure; Volumetric Procedure for Samples Using Karl Fischer Reagent, Method 1]. Use 25 g (28 mL) of the sample.
