Professor Reisz who first introduced his ring-oven t,echnique in 1954 has writ,ten a, fascinating book describing the technique, I n this second edition he has presented chapters dealing with the appa,ratus and its use for qualitative analysis, spot colorimetry, the treatment of organic subst’ances, radiochemical appiications, the combination of the ring-oven method with other techniques, applications in va,rious fields, and the concentration of substances in the form of a straight line. The book includes a complete list of original ringoven publications together with ot,her pertinent references. Among t,he various applications of the ring-oven that are of interest are those applying to radiochemical studies, air pollution investigations, and trace analysis and toxicology. T h e book also includes a wealth of information on the separation, identification, and estimation of trace materials. This reviewer still takes issue with Professor Weka in his modest claim for eemiquantitative analyses b y means of the ring-oven. We have found that the method is remarkably accurate for the determination of microgram and na’nogram amounts of material and feel that the ring-oven is as reliable for quantitative determination of traces as are such established methods as colorimetry, polarography, and emission spectrometzy.

T h e purpose of this book is to provide research workers in the field of partially ionized gases with a sufficiently comprehensive background for the successful measurenient of such plasma parameters as charge carrier concentration and temperature. The range of probe theories and practical details dealt with is much greater than in any previous publication; in fact, there is no other book concerned solely with this technique of plasma study. An advantage of the electrical probe method over other methods of plasma diagnostics is that the diagnosis can be performed using very simple apparatus The beginning of the book is concerned with the basic principles governing the motion of ions and electrons through a neutral gas in the presence of an electric field. Chapters 3 t o 8 deal with the collection of ions and electrons by a probe that is very much smaller than their mean free pat,h. “High pressure plasmas” are treated in Chapters 9 and 10. The remainder of the book i, conrerned with the more practical aspects of plasma diagnostics and deals with perturbation effects, probe measuring techniques including the use of probes under more complex conditions such as in the presence of magnetic fields and directed carrier flow, and other methods of plasma diagnostics.
