NH, It has been found capable of relieving certain patients of seizures unaffected by any other form of antiepileptic therapy, according to Abbott clinical reports. In vestigation has shown it to be particularly effective in treating psychomotor seizures. In grand mal, the incidence of improve ment was greater when the seizures oc curred in patients who also experienced petit mal or psychomotor attacks than when grand mal was the single manifesta tion. Heovy Liquids for Determining Specific Gravity of Solids A series of heavy liquids for determining the specific gravity of minerals, gems, and other substances by die sink-or-fioat method is announced by R. P. Cargille. The Cargille liquids now cover the range in 0.5 steps up to specific gravity of 7.5. Until now, the highest heavy liquid available has been Clericfs solu tion, composed of thallium salts, and hav ing a specific gravity of 4 at room tem perature. The increased range was ac complished by using suspensions of heavy metals dispersed in heavy liquids. This method is also applicable as a test for homogeneity and air pockets in the lighter alloys and it can be used to indicate the amount or type of filler in plastics. Cargille reports that the 22 standard heavy liquids are arranged in sets for minerals and gems, or will be furnished in any assortment. CS 2
Protective Coating From Cool Tor Coal tar pitch has been compounded by a recently developed process into a fast drying protective coating by breaking it down into minute molecules, then com bining it with water and a stabilizing emulsification agent to form a permanent suspension that can be brushed or sprayed, according to an announcement from FlashStone Co. Available under the name Tarlac this new coating is said to retain all the ex cellent protective and adhesive qualities of coal tar pitch, to be impervious to oils, greases, other petroleum derivatives, acids, alkalies, water, and condensation. It is recommended as a pro tective coating for concrete, metals, wood, and for other general protective purposes. Tarlac dries to a tough, enduring» flat black film, is completely insoluble in water, oil, or gasoline, is thinned when necessary with water, and covers up to 300 sq. ft. per gallon. CS 3
Promoted Detergent Commercial production of a "promoted" industrial detergent is announced by Wyandotte Chemicals Corp. Known as Kreelon CD, this new prod uct is an integral mixture combining the advantages of Wyandotte's Kreelon, an alkylarylsulfonate-type detergent, and the detergent promoter Carbose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose. This homogeneous product will find special application in the laundry and textile fields for such opera tions as commercial cleaning, scouring, kier boiling, after-soaping, and the like. This product can be substituted for any other alkylarylsulfonate detergent with a 20 to 709fc improvement of soil removal and whiteness retention properties in the cleaning and processing of cottons. Until now, these advantages were only available to those with storage space and handling facilities for both a detergent and a detergent promoter. Wyandotte oflFers the advantages of tbese two prod ucts in one fast-dissolving, dustless prod uct. CS 4
Insecticide for Mixing with Point An insecticide for mixing with paint is being marketed by Dianol Sales Corp. The active insecticide is dichlorodipbenyl dichloroethane which is mixed with inac tive material and sold for mixing with paint before application. Dianol does not dissolve but becomes suspended in the paint and is said to retain its effectiveness for four to five years. It can be used with most types of in terior and exterior paints» including oil, water, and dry paints, as well as white wash, casein, cement, and stucco paints. CS 5
Four Nutritional Products The release of four nutritional prod ucts, Engran, Rubragran, Rubramin sol uble tablets, and Rulivan, has been an nounced by E. R. Squibb & Sons. Engran is a vitamin-mineral dietary supplement formulated to assure a nu tritionally perfect pregnancy. It provides CHEMICAL
protective amounts of 13 vitamins and minerals, plus phosphorus and liver. Each is included on the basis of positive evi dence that it is of use as a dietary supple ment during pregnancy and lactation. Rubragran is a high potency oral hema turia It supplies vitamin B«, folic acid, vitamin C, iron and liver, and it is in tended as a prompt therapeutic agent for all macrocytic and microcytic anemias amenable to oral therapy. Rubramin soluble tablets facilitate vita min Bis therapy in children. Rubramin tablets dissolve in a teaspoonful of water and are virtually tasteless. They are in tended to aid in the promotion of growth in chronically ill or malnourished children. Rulivan supplies both liver injection and vitamin Bis in a single intramuscular preparation. Rulivan is intended to aid in the therapy of pernicious anemia, sprue, and certain other types of macrocytic anemia. Each 1 cc. of Rulivan supplies 15 units of liver injection and 30 micro grams of vitamin B«. CS 6
Plostic Cements Chemical Development Corp. is an nouncing three cements, CD 2, 94, and 114, designed specifically for bonding acrylic plastics. CD 2 was developed for Plexiglas; 94 and 114 for Lucite. These are monomer-base cements and produce bonds of good strength and ap pearance. Chemical Development recom mends them to firms who wish to form, sand, or machine the final product after assembly. CS 7
PRODUCT MOTES Chloromycetin for Children. Parke, Davis & Co. has introduced a Chloromy cetin product, which tastes like custard, for children too young to swallow capsules. Called Pediatric Chloromycetin Palmitate, the new product contains a tasteless de rivative of the antibiotic and is said not to require refrigeration. CS 8 Hypnotic. Schering Corp. has an nounced Dormison, a hypnotic which is said to induce calm, peaceful sleep. The active constituent is 3-methyl-pentyne-ol-3. Among the advantages listed by Schering are that the product is free from the habitforming properties of barbiturates, that it is rapidly metabolized, that it has no cumulative actions, and that it produces no toxic or aftereffects. It is indicated for simple insomnia, where severe pain or agitated psychotic states do not co-exist. CS · Hematinic Preparation.
