MEW Portable Metal H a r d n e s s Tester
T h e Ernst tester, made by N e w a g e International, permits taking of superficial readings with a portable instrument. It makes possible on-the-job metal-hardness testing, and tests without damaging the material or part.

The Ernst p o r t a b l e superficial metalhardness tester gives direct dial r e a d i n g in Rockwell 15NT Scale, 7 0 - 9 5 . The tester h a s a spring-loaded d i a m o n d penetrator iiidentor. Readings a p p e a r on a 2-in. diameter scale. To take a hardness measurement, t h e handgrips are pressed downwards. T h i s action lowers t h e indentor housing t o bring t h e under surface of the tester a g a i n s t the surface of t h e material to be tested. Further depression of the handgrips penetrates t h e surface of the test material. The movement com presses the d i a p h r a g m of a fluid-filled chamber. Fluid is thereby forced further into the capillary tube which encircles t h e dial, to indicate the hardness n u m b e r on t h e dial scale. Ε 1 C o l o r Alarrn The Kallikainen-Shell development color alarm is a differential type color imeter providing a n alarm or a visual signal when a preset color limit is ex ceeded. It is a compact continuous flow color indicator utilizing phototubes and an amplifier which actuates t h e signal device. It is available i n b o t h explosionproof a n d standard models. The instrument is stable to about Vw of a union color n u m b e r when used on kerosene under usual line voltage fluctua tions. Models are available for continuously indicating and recording color.
