PEOPLE New HHMI investigators The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) selected 43 biomedical scientists in March as new HHMI investigators. Two of them have contributed to Analytical Chemistry. The selection demonstrates a growing trend toward multidisciplinary research and the blurring of the line between chemistry and biology. Analytical Chemistry has seen a growing number of biology-related papers in recent years.

Milan Mrksich, a professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, was
chosen for his work on deciphering the molecular basis of cell adhesion. He has developed mimics of extracellular protein matrix surfaces and created artificial surfaces for biochip arrays that assay specific biological activities. Stephen R. Quake, a professor of bioengineering at Stanford University, was chosen for his work in microfluidics. He has designed several chip-based systems for analyzing DNA and single cells as well as for growing crystallized proteins.
