NEW PRODUCTS Instruments

SERVOPOTENTIOMETERS T h e Industrial Division of Honeywell, Inc., has just introduced a new line of servopotentiometers for use in a variety of process control applications. T h e line, designated ElectroniK 111, consists of intermediate-size (smaller than ElectroniK 15) instruments which can be obtained with or without controllers. T h e instruments in the line are a circular scale indicator, a circular chart recorder, and a strip chart recorder. Honeywell claims extreme dependability and ruggedness for the ElectroniK 111 instruments; they need “no more than routine service,” and were designed flexible so as to function as broad-purpose servopotentiometers for industrial applications. Some of the applications foreseen by Honeywell include uses for temperature recording and control of autoclaves, reactors, evaporators, distillation columns, heat exchangers and blending tanks, and control of temperatures of heat transfer fluids. Rigid field tests are said to have been exceptionally successful and to have justified the three-plus years spent by the company in industrial development. Each instrument in the ElectroniK 111 line accepts as input any variable that can be converted into a dc millivolt signal-eg., inputs from thermocouples, Radiamatic detectors and resistance thermometers. Solid-state circuits and a precision slidewire with a quadfurcated contactor (to maintain electrical continuity in the presence of dust or vibrations) ensure reliability of operation. Rated performance of the indicator and recorders is excellent: Accuracy is to &0.3y0 of span, reproducibility to ~ k 0 . 1 5 7of ~ span, dead band is 0.1 Yoof span, and span step response time is 5 or 15 sec. Normal operation is assured in ambient temperatures u p to 14O0F or

down to 16OF and in relative humidities between 5 and 957,. T h e strip chart recorder is available with drive speeds of 1, 2, 6, 10, 12, 20, 30, a n d 60 in./hr, with change gears supplied for one half or twice the basic speed. T h e circular chart recorder model has chart speeds of 1, 4, 8, and 24 h r / revolution. Additional attractive features are chassis interchangeability and the availability of chart cartridges which are easily installed in or removed from the strip chart recorder (a 6-in. wide chart is used). Controller options for the ElectroniK 111 line are most attractive features of these servopotentiometers. Controller models are available to enable users to vary electrical or pneumatic signals. For electrical signals, models are obtainable for contact control (on/off control) , Electr-0-Volt current proportioning control (providing 4-20 mA controlled output for S C R s etc.), Electr-0-Line position proportioning control (to drive position-con-

trolling motors), and Electr-0-Pulse time proportioning control (providing relay output of variable pulse length) . Pneumatic controllers are available for two-mode (integral plus proportional) or three-mode (integral plus proportional plus derivative) control; these controllers require 20 & 2 psig air supply and consume the supply at 10 scfh maximum, while providing a 3- 15 psig signal to the process. Electrical and pneumatic control units feature “bumpless” transfer and they can be removed from service while the process continues uninterruptedly under manual control. T h a t Honeywell has given much thought to actual plant applications for the ElectroniK 111 instruments is obvious from a brief check of their list of options, which include such security measures as door locks and omission of the main power switch to minimize the chance of unauthorized tampering. T h e instruments are compact136/8 in. deep, 9 l l 2 in. wide, and 101/2 in. high (14 in. high if a con-

Furan compounds represent a type of organic chemistry in between the dienic and aromatic types. The chemical reactivity of these compounds is a dual function-that of the unsaturated ring and of the group or groups attached to the ring. The furans possess both dienic and etheric properties due to the very structure of the nucleus. Some of the compounds manufactured by The Quaker Bats Company are listed below together with a description of the more important chemical properties. The polyfunctionality of these compounds presents a challenge and an opportunity to the investigator. A number of furan type reactions have been developed to industrial significance. The future should witness a great many more as this field of chemistry is further explored. For a general survey of the furans, write for Bulletin 201-E.
