News & Announcements News from JCE Take the JCE Survey! JCE is planning for the future, and we want to make sure that our plans align with your requirements and wishes. We are evaluating nearly all aspects of what we do, and we would like to know how you use our offerings. To help us do so, we have commissioned a survey to collect data on who uses JCE, how they use it, and which offerings are ranked as most or least important. Please take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to complete our survey. Doing this will help us continue to offer the chemical education community the world’s premier journal about teaching and learning chemistry. You’ll find the link to our survey on JCE’s Web site: http://www.jce.divched.org/ survey2009/ (accessed Oct 2009). Email Addresses Needed Don’t get lost in the transition to ACS! Starting with the January 2010 issue ACS Publications will begin managing all JCE subscriptions including online access to the Journal. ACS Pubs will be contacting JCE subscribers with new online access codes by email. If you do not have a current email address on file with JCE you will miss this important information. Don’t miss out: as soon as possible, please send your email address and subscriber number (the 5-digit code near the top of your mailing label) to
[email protected], with the subject line “email address”. We promise never to sell or circulate this private information. Thanks! Earth Day 2010 Coming soon! The February 2010 issue will feature coverage of Earth Day 2010 on the theme, “Plants—The Green Machines”. The issue will arrive in mid-January, giving you plenty of time to prepare for Earth Day on April 22, 2010. Regular features such as Research Advances, a JCE Classroom Activity, News from Online, and Book and Media Reviews will all have information related to Earth Day. You can also expect the issue to have many articles related to plant and soil chemistry.

News & Announcements by all volunteer Committee members of the Pittsburgh Conference and its sponsoring societies to encourage and support science education at all levels. The program serves as a memorial to deceased members of the Pittsburgh Conference Committee by promoting excellence in science education. With this program, small colleges can enhance their science curricula through grants to purchase equipment and course materials. In 2010, at least $115,000 is available for about twelve awards. Grants will be awarded to small college science departments for the purchase of scientific equipment, audio-visual or other teaching aids, and library materials for use in teaching science at the undergraduate level. The amount requested in each proposal may not exceed $10,000. Funding for the awards is provided by PITTCON, the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, which will be held from February 28 through March 5, 2010, at Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. For further information, the 2010 criteria, an application form, and a list of previous awardees, go to http://www.pittcon. org/educational/grants.html (accessed Oct 2009). The deadline for receipt of completed applications and proposals is December 1, 2009. Announcement of the awards will be made during February 2010. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation offers many awards, including the Camille Dreyfus Teacher–Scholar Awards and the Henry Dreyfus Teacher–Scholar Awards Program; see http://www.dreyfus.org/ (accessed Oct 2009). Research Corporation for Science Advancement Research Corporation for Science Advancement offers the Cottrell College Science Awards and the Cottrell Scholar Awards; see http://www.rescorp.org/ (accessed Oct 2009).

Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities News from the Chemistry Education Digital Libary A Living Chemistry Text: Be a Part of It The ChemPRIME Project is waiting for your contribution! ChemPRIME (Chemical Principles through Integrated Multiple Exemplars), a part of the ChemEd DL, offers an opportunity for scholars in all fields of chemistry and related sciences to collaborate on the creation of an online chemistry textbook that combines the structure of traditional general chemistry with the power of case studies. In this project, we consider existing topics in general chemistry and relate them to other fields—for example, “Chemistry in Geology”, “Chemistry in Culture”, and even “Chemistry in Everyday Life”. Then we expand what might be a single example illustrating the topic into multiple examples (exemplars) that students can relate to. We would like to have contributors who could provide examples of using chemistry in different fields, thus making this textbook more relevant and exciting to students. If you know how chemical principles are applied in geology, environmental or green chemistry, or some other field, we would like to hear from you. Because of its great appeal and facility in creating collaborative resources, we are using wiki technology for the ChemPRIME Project. The backbone is a complete general chemistry text: Chemistry by John W. Moore, William G. Davies, and Ronald W. Collins. The entire text is available as a learning resource for your students, and it has these distinctive characteristics:
• Clicking any link in the table of contents instantly brings you to the content you are interested in viewing as well as all of the associated exemplars from various fields.
• Because the text is editable, new and exciting developments in any field can be added, making it an everchanging textbook.
• You can include resources from the ChemEd DL that may help students understand the material better.
• You can assign students to create exemplars, and we will provide a way for their work to be collected, evaluated, and possibly added to ChemPRIME.
