News & Announcements News from Journal House JCE Buyers Guide This issue carries with it the first Journal of Chemical Education Buyers Guide. While based on our stalwart Book Buyers Guide, this new publication has broader coverage that better reflects the products of interest to Journal readers. Of course the lists of textbooks you expect to find will still be there, as will information about models, laboratory notebooks, reference books, and a directory of publishers and suppliers. But the software section has three new categories: graphing software, scientific mathematical processors, and course infrastructure software. In addition, Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences is a new subheading under Physical Chemistry. This is just the first step in broadening our coverage in the Buyers Guide. If there is a category that you would like to see represented, let us know. Award Deadlines CHF Research Travel Grants The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) invites applications for Research Travel Grants. These are small travel grants to enable interested individuals to make use of the research resources of the Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry, the Othmer Library of Chemical History, and associated facilities. Grants may be used for travel, subsistence, and copying costs. While grants do not normally exceed $500, applications for up to $1000 will be considered, particularly from international applicants. Applications should include a complete curriculum vitae, a one-page statement on the research proposed and the applicability of area resources, and a budget. In addition, applicants should arrange for two letters of reference to be sent directly to CHF. Deadlines are February 1 for grants used April–June, May 1 for grants used July–September, August 1 for grants used October–November, and November 1 for grants used January–March. The fifth annual Ullyot scholarship, to be awarded for summer 2001, offers a stipend of $3,500 plus modest travel and research support. The stipend is to support a minimum of two months research on the heritage of the chemical sciences, utilizing the resources of CHF’s Othmer Library of Chemical History in Philadelphia, other area libraries, and associated resources. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a onepage description of the proposed research, and an outline of a specific product as an outcome of the scholarship. The proposal should demonstrate how the resources of the Othmer Library are relevant to the applicant’s project. Two letters of reference should be sent directly to CHF. Glenn Research Center, in collaboration with the Ohio Aerospace Institute, has an educational program that provides internships for students of science, engineering, professional administrative, and technical areas. Internships of 10 weeks are available during the summer months at the NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH. Internships are available to U.S. citizens who are fulltime students in good standing pursuing a baccalaureate or higher degree in the field of science, engineering, and technology at an accredited college or university in the United States or Puerto Rico. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The deadline for submitting an application for the internship program is January 31, 2001. Selected applicants will be notified by April 15, 2001. Tenure may begin May 21, June 4, or June 18, 2001. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. CHF Ullyot Scholarship

The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) invites applications from educators, graduate students, science writers, and journalists for the Glenn E. and Barbara Hodsdon Ullyot Scholarship. The goal of the Ullyot Scholarship is to advance public understanding of the importance of the chemical sciences and industries to the public welfare.
Midwest Theoretical Chemistry Conference The 34th Midwest Theoretical Chemistry Conference (MTCC 2001) will be held on the Minneapolis Campus of the University of Minnesota October 4–6, 2001. There will be a nominal registration fee of $25, which will be waived for everyone presenting a talk or poster. Indi-
