The activity and articles are described on page 945. You can order JCE materials for your classes or for groups with which you will celebrate National Chemistry Week: additional copies of our October issue, copies of the special new Classroom Activity (making toothpaste), or copies of previous Classroom Activities; or you can arrange for temporary online access to JCE for a group. ACS Women Chemists Committee Awards In commemoration of its 75th anniversary in 2002, the ACS Women Chemists Committee is presenting Regional Awards for Contributions to Diversity. The award goes to five individuals who have significantly stimulated and fostered diversity in the chemical enterprises. Jeannette Brown, director, Statewide Systemic Initiative, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ; to be presented at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting. John R. Laing, Supplies Delivery Unit, Xerox Corp., Webster, NY; to be presented at the Women Chemists Luncheon during the Fall ACS national meeting in Boston. Catherine Hurt Middlecamp, Chemistry Learning Center, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI; to be presented at the Great Lakes Regional Meeting. Geraldine L. Richmond, Department of Chemistry, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR; to be presented at the Northwest Regional Meeting. Awards Announced John A. Timm Award
2002 Welch Award
The New England Association of Chemistry Teachers (NEACT) has announced that the 2002 recipient of the John A. Timm Award is Morton Z. Hoffman of Boston University. The Timm Award, established by NEACT in 1971, commemorates the memory of John A. Timm of Yale University and Simmons College, is presented annually Morton Z. Hoffman to a person who has made outstanding contributions to the education of young people in chemistry. Hoffman is the 27th recipient of the award. He will deliver an address to the association and will receive a certificate and a monetary award. Hoffman, a chemist active in photochemistry and photophysics, has long been active in chemical education. He is the recipient of numerous other honors and awards. His own photograph appears here in honor of the photographs of the Boston area that he has graciously provided for this issue of the Journal.
The Welch Foundation has announced that Harden McConnell of Stanford University has been awarded the 2002 Welch Award, a $300,000 prize and gold medallion given for lifetime achievements in basic chemical research, in recognition of his contributions. McConnell’s work concerns the fundamental molecular properties of cell membranes, including those related to the regulation of cholesterol and the activation of the body’s immune system. The award will be presented in October at a banquet hosted by the Welch Foundation in Houston. 2002 AOCS Awards The American Oil Chemists’ Society announces these awards for 2002. •
