A data base of about 11,000 mass spectra, acquired by EPA and NIH, is available for purchase through NBS and NTIS for $500. These data, which have not appeared previously in Aldermaston or John Wiley collec tions, have been evaluated and checked by Fred McLafferty and are considered to be of the same quality as the Wiley Registry File which he pre pared. The data are in the public do main with no ownership or copyright restrictions. The data base should tri ple in size within a year, and an updat ed version will be available in 1976. The data, along with the Aldermaston and Wiley spectra collections, are also available with many software search options on the Mass Spectral Search System (MSSS). Access to the system is available for a yearly subscription costing less than the purchase of the data base from NBS/NTIS. With the interna tional teleprocessing capabilities of the Cyphernet System, the data base is maintained and updated by the Mass Spectrometry Data Centre in Al dermaston, England. The spectral characteristics of more than 25,000 chemical compounds are stored in a computer system, ready for access in North America and Europe by time sharing terminals. The data base can be used for the identification of un known chemical compounds. Applica tions abound in environmental, medi cal, pharmaceutical, petroleum, and chemical fields. Aquatic Environment Sciences, Union Carbide Corp., Saw Mill River Rd. 100C, Tarrytown, N.Y. 10591, 914-345-3974, has expanded its aquatic toxicity facility in anticipation of the need for companies to acquire basic toxicity data to document the ef fects of substances on mammalian, aquatic, and wildlife species to meet OSHA/NIOSH regulations. Tests are conducted on fresh water species and marine and algal species for static acute, flow-through acute, subchronic, chronic, and residue analysis.
