High School Section With this issue, Emory Howell becomes the editor of the High School Section. The transition has gone very smoothly. Emory has been writing Especially for High School Teachers since September, and now he will be handling the review of manuscripts, their revisions and recommendations for acceptance by the editor, and the coordination and scheduling of accepted manuscripts so that they appear not only in a timely fashion but also along with other articles whose content is complementary. Emory will work with authors to develop articles, just as Mickey Sarquis did during her tenure. The High School Editor has a big job, and Emory now has an editorial assistant, Caren P. Daniel. Caren, who has a degree in News and Editorial Journalism with an English Emphasis, has previous experience as an editorial assistant and has written a number of newspaper articles. She will help Emory and she will also work with those of you who contact the High School office. Mickey Sarquis, who is stepping down as editor of this section, has written recollections of her 17 years and presented some challenges for the future; her article begins on page 17.
JCE on CD-ROM This year the Journal will publish the first in an annual series of CD-ROMs that contain the full text and graphics for all the articles, features, and reviews published in the previous year. JCE: CD 1996, the first of the series, will contain the issues September through December 1996. Since it is the first in this series and since it will contain four months rather than twelve, the CD-ROM will be available as a special trial offer for a very low price that will barely cover shipping, handling, and materials. But it is even more of a bargain—there will be a questionnaire sent with each CD that will ask your opinion on various features of the CD, how you used it, how you would like to use it in the future. If you are a registered owner of JCE: CD-1996 and you complete and return the questionnaire by April 21, 1997, you will receive a certificate that is good for $10 toward the purchase of JCE: CD 1997. The Journal staff is very excited about this new publication. It will be for Macintosh, Windows, and Windows 95 and will give you quick and convenient access. It will have color graphics, full text searching, hot links, an index for the full year, complete articles—and still take up very little space on your shelf. You will find more information in the abstract on page 128 and on the order form just inside the back cover.
JCE Online; http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/ Our World Wide Web site has undergone a massive overhaul in the past few months and the revised version is now up and ready for use. The address is the same (see above) but its new appearance makes it easier and clearer to use. The features have changed, too, partly representing the natural growth of this dynamic area and 6
partly reflecting the melding of the portion of the site that was previously done at the Journal offices at the University of Texas with that portion—software, online, Internet—that was being done in Wisconsin. A screen from the “new” JCE Online can be seen on page 2.
Submitting a Lab Experiment? If you are thinking about submitting your favorite new lab for publication (great news!), please remember to check out the December issue, pages A310–A311 for the new Journal policy. We are confident that publishing lab summaries in the print Journal and publishing the actual experiments themselves on JCE Online will make this popular section even more valuable for readers. And if you cannot access JCE Online, we will mail you the information you need.
New Features, New Faces To help us develop a much stronger presence for JCE Online and publish annual CD-ROMs, not to mention printing additional pages to reduce the time between acceptance and publication of a paper, we really needed an extra pair of hands. The extra pair belongs to Gail Thorson who came on board November 1. While she works on a nearly finished Ph.D. thesis in physical chemistry, she will work mornings; as soon as the thesis has been completed, it will be full time.
Selecting Textbooks? If you normally think about selecting textbooks for next year sometime around February or March, you may be happy to know that our very handy Book Buyers Guide will come with the March Journal. This will be a full Guide, not just a supplement, and you should receive it in mid-February. Publishing the full Book Buyers Guide at this time rather than only an update to the September issue is an experiment, so please let us know how useful you find it. Of course textbook information is available every day, all day, if you go to the Chemical Education Resource Shelf portion of JCE Internet.
Thank You, Reviewers At the beginning of a new year it is customary to look around and take stock of things. It is in this vein that we thank the hundreds of reviewers around the world on whom this Journal depends. So here is a blanket thank you to all reviewers. If you look through this issue, you will find that we have begun to list all of their names. But there are lots of reviewers, and it will take more than one issue to get everyone’s name listed.
