INTERPRETATION OF INFRARED SPECTRA by Norman B. Colthup THE COURSE This latest Audio Course is based on the popular ACS Short Course that Mr. Colthup has taught for more than six years. It consists primarily of a detailed study of how to interpret the infrared spectra of organic compounds. Necessary elementary theory is developed, particularly as it applies to spectral interpretation. Principal group frequencies are discussed, and the infrared spectra of over 100 representative compounds are analyzed. Interspersed throughout are problem solving sessions during which the student stops the cassette player and tries his hand at interpreting "unknown" spectra, which are subsequently discussed by Mr. Colthup. The listener is thus motivated to participate on an active basis. The course is designed for both beginners and those with some experience in IR spectroscopy. It will be of greatest value to organic chemists who have made preliminary use of IR spectroscopy as a tool for the study of molecular structure and who wish to learn more about the subject.

million copies have been distributed. He is senior author of the Colthup, Wiberly, and Daly text on IR and Raman spectroscopy and is lecturer in the 4-hour ACS Film Course on interpretation of IR spectra. THE TAPES The audiotape portion of the course consists of five cassettes. Total playing time is 7.2 hours. THE MANUAL The course manual (145 pages) contains the diagrams, equations, and spectra discussed in the lectures, as well as the spectral problems with work sheets and solutions. To benefit from the course each listener will need to have a personal copy of the course manual. PURCHASE Complete unit:

$60. Consists of five cassettes and one copy of the course manual.

Course manuals:

$4.25 (1-9 copies) $3.50 (10-49 copies) $3.25 (50 or more copies)

The presentation utilizes two media which complement and reinforce each other. One is the lecture portion on audiotape cassettes, the other is the integrated course manual containing reference and illustrative materials.
