Plunged into boiling water, the adhesion of the Versalon* 1175 resin used in making this Polyvinyl Fluoride film-to-steei joint remains unaffected. Its toughness is the result of combined good tensile strength and high elongation.

POLYAMIDE R E S I N S

Here's a new series of tough, flexible resins—simple to apply hot melts, that adhere tenaciously to many substrates even in severe environmental conditions...

New Versalon® polyamide resins are tough. Tough because they combine good tensile strength with very high elongations, resulting in high work-to-break. A simple hot melt system now gives you the adhesion you would expect from some two component systems which require post cure. If surface preparation is needed at all, it is minimal using Versalon resins. Each of the physical properties of this new family of polyamide resins can be varied over a wide range. Three resins are currently available which lie at various points within each property range. An infinite number of other unique combinations of properties can be achieved. Look at the " tailoring' ' possible within the ranges shown below for a few of the physical characteristics of the Versalon resin family as a whole. Softening Point: from below 100°C to greater than 200°C. Elongation: from 100 per cent to as much as 700 per cent. Tensile Strength: room temperature tensile ranges from 500 psi to 3,000 psi. Viscosity: at 200°C, viscosities

range from less than 10 poises to greater than 50 poises. Water Absorption: an extremely low 0.07-0.30 per cent in 24 hours. Impact Strength: 0.14-9.3 foot lbs. /in. by notched Izod test. The higher figure is achieved with no breakage. Versalon resins can provide almost instantaneous set. No "curing" or "setting" time is needed. This property alone can eliminate time- and space-wasting bottlenecks in a production line. In bonding metals, where preheating of the metal is essential for maximum surface wetting and adhesive strength, instantquenching in water has been found to have no harmful effect on bond strength. Versalon resins are compatible with each other and a wide variety of other resins and plasticizers. You or your formulated adhesives supplier can arrive at combinations which meet the viscosity, melting point and other property requirements of your specific fastening job. In most instances this is achieved with a further reduction in your fastening costs. The resins are available in finely crushed or uniformly diced

form for use in hot melt or extrusion e q u i p m e n t . Ground to powder, they can be used in fluid bed dip equipment or powder spray equipment. Some are soluble in the lower alcohols or alcohol-hydrocarbon mixtures; others show very little solubility and consequently good resistance to common solvents. Adhesives based on Versalon resins or the resins themselves will adhere to a variety of substrates—wood, metal, plastics, rubber, paper, leather. These resins are non-toxic and nonvolatile. Because of their low water absorption, they have excellent dimensional stability and a good dielectric constant. A Versalon resin may be just the product for your fastening application.
