Spent powdered activated carbon can be regenerated by passing a carbon water slurry containing 10% solids and 90j{ water directly into the flame of a gas fired reactor at 1400-1600° F., according to L. D. Friedman of the. FMC Corporation at last month's 156th ACS National Meeting (Atlantic City. N.J.). The water is converted to sto.!am which reactivates the carbon as it is carried through the reactor; the residence time in the reactor is less than five seconds. The regenerated carbon has less than a 2% increase in ash content, and the carbon losses per regeneration cycle are less than 107(;, according to the FMC spokesman.
