The key advance that has helped put the bloom on the office testing rose is the adoption of prepackaged reagent systems and instrumental devices that eliminate most of the traditional pitfalls and labor of testing. Laessig points out that demand for inoffice testing is driven, in part, by demands from patients for more efficient health care delivery: "Patients are less willing to return for a second visit because the physician is awaiting a laboratory result on a specimen sent elsewhere."
