JCE WebWare: Web-Based Learning Aids
William F. Coleman Wellesley College Wellesley, MA 02481
Peer-Reviewed JCE WebWare 3D Normal Modes enables you or your students to choose one of 28 different molecules, orient it appropriately on the screen, choose any of its normal vibrational modes, and animate molecular vibrations in 3D. 3D Normal Modes includes a data base of experimental fundamental frequencies (1) and the corresponding normal modes of a representative sampling of inorganic and organic molecules. The normal modes have been obtained from ab initio HF/3-21G calculations (2, 3). 3D Normal Modes is an excellent example of how the Web can be used to easily provide desktop-quality applications to a wide

audience. You can find 3D Normal Modes—and the entire peer-reviewed collection of JCE WebWare—at http:// www.JCE.DivCHED.org/JCEDLib/WebWare/collection/reviewed/. 3D Normal Modes was first published by JCE Software as a Windows desktop application, part of the Advanced Chemistry Collection, 4th Edition. (See the abstract at http://www.JCE.DivCHED.org/Journal/Issues/ 2003/Oct/abs1222_2.html.) The application has been totally redesigned for distribution via the Web and provides rapid response even via a telephone-line connection.
