Changes at TopoMetrix Gary Aden, president and CEO of TopoMetrix since 1991, has been named the company's chairman of the board and CEO. Shirley Clayton, TopoMetrix Shirley Clayton, chief financial offiTopoMetrix's new cer, has taken Ad- president. en's position as president, and Riccardo Pigliucci, former president of Perkin Elmer has been elected chairman of the company's Executive Committee According to Clayton, the changes represent TopoMetrix's emergence into a more mature phase where it "needs to reposition itself in the marketplace." One sign of that change will be Aden's role of "looking for business opportunities." In addition, the company expects Pigliucci to help guide them from a "purely entrepreneurial" firm to a "substantial operating company."

1997 Division of Analytical Chemistry Awards The ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry seeks nominations for its 1997 awards. Eligibility is not restricted to members of the Division, and nominations for these awards may also come from non-DAC members. The Award in Chemical Instrumentation, sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company Foundation, is given to an individual who has advanced chemical instrumentation and has achieved one or more of the following: developed unique instrumentation, demonstrated innovative use of instrumentation in chemical measurements, stimulated use of instrumentation among other researchers, or published research papers or books that have influenced chemical measurement. The Award for Excellence in Teaching, cosponsored by the Division and DuPont, recognizes a scientist who has enhanced the professional development of analytical chemistry students in the following ways: published an influential textbook, designed and implemented a new approach to teaching, encouraged a significant number of students to become analytical chemists, developed and published innovative experiments, designed improved equipment for teaching labs or published widely quoted articles on teaching analytical chemistry. Teachers who have been full-time faculty members for at least five years at U S or Canadian colleges or universities can be nominated for the award Awards in Spectrochemical Analysis (sponsored by Perkin-Elmer Corp.) and in Electrochemistry (sponsored by EG&G Princeton Applied Research) are presented to individuals who have advanced the fields of spectrochemical analysis and electrochemical analysis. Candidates must have achieved one or more of the following: conceptualized and developed unique instrumentation, developed novel and important instrumentation or methods, elucidated fundamental events or processes important to the field or published research parjers or books that have influenced the development of the field The Arthur F. Findeis Award for Achievements by a Young Analytical Scientist, sponsored by the Phillip Morris
Companies, recognizes outstanding contributions in the fields of analytical chemistry by a young analytical scientist who has accomplished one or more of the following: conceptualized and developed unique instrumentation that has substantively advanced the field; developed significant analytical methodologies for use in the chemical sciences; elucidated fundamental events or processes pertinent to analytical chemistry; authored books, patents, and/or research papers that have had an influential role in the development of analytical chemistry; or made other significant contributions that have furthered analytical chemical sciences. To be eligible the awardee must have earned his or her highest degree within the 10 years preceding Jan 1 of the award year Each award consists of a $4000 honorarium, a plaque, and a $1000 travel allowance for the fall 1997 ACS national meeting where the awards will be presented. The Findeis Award will be presented at an award symposium at the Eastern Analytical Symposium held in Somerset, NJ, in November. Nominating documents should include a letter of recommendation, one or more seconding letters, and a brief biographical sketch emphasizing the candidate's accomplishments. Nomination materials, which should not exceed 12 pages of text, should be sent in one package by Sept. 1 to Edward S. Yeung, Dept. of Chemistry, 1161 Gilman Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011.
SACP Starter Grant Awards for new faculty The Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh requests nominations for three Starter Grant Awards. The grants, $10,000 each, are designed to encourage innovative research by new analytical chemistry professors and to promote training and development of graduate students in the field. Assistant professors who have accepted a college or university appointment in the United States since Dec. 31,1992, are eligible. Application forms for the Starter Grants can be obtained from SACP, Resa Brna, Chair, Starter Grants Committee, 300 Penn Center Blvd., Suite 332, Pittsburgh, PA 15235 (1-800-825-3221 or 412825-3220; fax 412-825-3224).
