HP buys Rockland Technologies In January, Hewlett Packard announced an agreement to purchase Rockland Technologies (RTI, Newport, DE), manufacturer of Zorbax HPLC columns. RTI was formed in 1989 by former DuPont employees who licensed DuPont technology for manufacturing silica-based products. RTI is expected to be integrated into HP Instruments' Little Falls Division, also based in Delaware.

1998 Division of Analytical Chemistry Awards The ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry (DAC) seeks nominations for its 1998 awards. Eligibility is not restricted to members of the division, and nominations for these awards may also come from non-DAC members. The Award in Chemical Instrumentation, sponsored by the Dow Chemical Co. Foundation, is given to an individual who has advanced chemical instrumentation and has achieved one or more of the following: developed unique instrumentation, demonstrated innovative use of instrumentation in chemical measurements, stimulated use of instrumentation among ather researchers, or published research papers or books that have influenced ±emical measurement. The Award for Excellence in Teaching, co-sponsored by DAC and DuPont, recognizes a scientist who has enhanced [he professional development of analyti:al chemistry students in the following ways: published an influential textbook, designed and implemented a new ap3roach to teaching, encouraged a signifi;ant number of students to become analytical chemists, developed and published innovative experiments, designed

improved equipment for teaching labs, or published widely quoted articles on teaching analytical chemistry. Teachers who have been full-time faculty members for at least five years at U.S. or Canadian colleges or universities can be nominated for the award. The Awards in Spectrochemical Analysis (sponsored by Perkin Elmer) and Electrochemistry (sponsored by EG&G Princeton Applied Research) are presented to individuals who have advanced the fields of spectrochemical analysis and electrochemical analysis. Candidates must have achieved one or more of the following: conceptualized and developed unique instrumentation, developed novel and important instrumentation or methods, elucidated fundamental events or processes important to thefield,or published research papers or books that have influenced the development of the field. The Arthur F. Findeis Award for Achievements by a Young Analytical Scientist, sponsored by the Philip Morris Companies, recognizes outstanding contributions in the fields of analytical chemistry by a young analytical scientist who has accomplished one or more of the following: conceptualized and developed unique instrumentation that has substantially advanced the field; developed significant analytical methodologies for use in the chemical sciences; elucidated fundamental events or processes pertinent to analytical chemistry; authored books, patents, and/or research papers that have had an influential role in the development of analytical chemistry; or made other significant contributions that have furthered analytical chemical sciences. To be eligible, the awardee must have earned his or her highest degree within the 10 years preceding Jan. 1 of the award year. Each award consists of a $4000 honorarium, a plaque, and a $1000 travel allowance for the fall 1998 ACS national meeting, where the awards will be presented. Nominating documents should include a letter of recommendation, one or more seconding letters, and a brief biographical sketch emphasizing the candidate's accomplishments. Nomination materials, which should not exceed 12 pages of text, should be sent in one package by Sept. 1 to Stephen Wise, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Bldg. 222, Rm. B204, Gaithersburg, MD 20899 (301-975-3112; fax 301977-0685; [email protected]).
