PEOPLE Deaths. CONSTANCE KIES, 59, professor of nutritional science and dietetics at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, died of cancer Nov. 30, 1993. A native of Blue River, Wis., Kies received a B.S. degree in 1955 from Wisconsin State College, Platteville (now the University of Wisconsin, Platteville), an M.S. degree in 1960, and a Ph.D. degree in 1963, both from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was affiliated with many professional organizations, including ACS, the American and Nebraska Dietetic Associations, and the American Home Economics Association from which she received the Borden Award in 1973 for outstanding research. Kies published over 100 refereed journal articles, 33 book chapters, and was editor of four books. Her research centered on protein requirements of humans and protein-mineral interactions. About 175 M.S. degree and 32 Ph.D. degree students completed their programs under her direction. Joined ACS in 1970. HAROLD R. (Jerry) NACE, 72, professor of chemistry at Brown University, died Nov. 29, 1993, in Providence, R.I. Nace received a B.S. degree from Lehigh University in 1943, attended the Institute of Paper

Chemistry in Appleton, Wis., for a year, and then worked as a research chemist at DuPont for another year. In 1945, he entered graduate school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked with Arthur C. Cope, receiving a Ph.D. degree in 1948. He immediately joined Brown University as an instructor of chemistry, and after three promotions, became professor of chemistry in 1959. He stopped teaching in 1980 because of health problems. Nace's research interests included the chemistry of steroids, particularly modifications of naturally occurring compounds that could be screened for potentially useful medicinal properties. He entered the field of steroid chemistry in its heyday and was quick to apply new reactions and instrumental methods to his research. For example, he was one of the first organic chemists to apply dipole-moment measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to the conformational analysis of steroids. He and his students were also among the first to use dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent for carrying out organic reactions and, nearly simultaneously with Nathan Kornblum at Purdue, Nace discovered a new method of synthesizing carbonyl compounds from organic halides and DMSO. procedure was often called the Kornblum reaction, Kornblum himself always insisted that it be called the Nace reaction. Joined ACS in 1943; emeritus member. J. ERNEST NACHOD Jr., 78, died Sept. 27, 1993, after a long bout with hepatitis and leukemia. Nachod received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. He attended graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied law and business administration. After working for DuPont as a chemical engineer, he was employed for 10 years by Hercules, where he was engaged in the operation and maintenance of ammonia plants. Later, Nachod transferred to the research department where he supervised engineering development of DDT and many other development programs in the chemical and petrochemical fields. He held patents covering phases of maleic anhydride manufacture and hydrochloric acid concentration. Nachod began his 20-year association with Fish Engineering & Construction as a project manager of a petrochemical complex. As vice president and general manager, he directed both U.S. and Argentine activities. He retired in 1980 as executive vice president. Joined ACS in 1938; emeritus member. •
