Benedetti-Pichler award Jonathan V. Sweedler, associate professor at the University of Illinois, is the recipient of the American Microchemical Society's BenedettiPichler award. Sweedler's research focuses on identifying and measuring neurotransmitters and neuropeptides and determining how these compounds control feeding and reproduction in the marine snail aplysia. His group has developed new microseparation methods based on CE and chromatography and a wide variety of detection modes.
DAC fellowship nominations Applications are being accepted for the 2000-2001 Division of Analytical Chemistry graduate fellowships. The fellowships are
open to full-time graduate students working toward a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry who will have completed their second year of graduate studies by thetimetheir fellowship begins. The applicant's adviser must be a member of the Division, and only one nomination per adviser will be accepted. In addition to the application forms, nominees must submit three letters of recommendation and undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Applications and information are available at http://www.wabash.edu/ acsgraduatefellowship/home.htm. For information, contact Richard Dallinger of Wabash College (preferably by e-mail) at
[email protected], 765-261-6242, or fax 765-361-6340. Deadline is Dec. 3.
Crystallography scholarship awards The International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) is accepting applications for the year 2000 crystallography scholarship award of $2250. There are no restrictions
on nationality, race, age, or gender. The term of the scholarship is one year, and the recipient may apply for one renewal at the end of the first year. Applications must include a curriculum vitae that lists degree (s) held and sought, a one-page proposal describing the crystallographic research of interest, and a recommendation letter from the applicant's sponsoring professor on university letterhead. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, laboratory fees, and meeting registration fees. The funds may not be used for travel. No more than one scholarship will be awarded to applicants at any one accredited institution per year. Applications must be received by Oct. 29. Fax transmittals will be accepted until Oct. 29; however, a hard copy of the application must be received by ICDD no later than Dec. 1. E-mail applications will not be accepted. Send applications to Secretary, International Centre for Diffraction Data, 12 Campus Blvd., Newtown Square, PA 19073-3273 USA (fax 610-325-9823).

DimethylaIkylsilylating reagents(DMASI) have been used to distinguish between phenolic and alcoholic hydroxyl groups. Using sandwich injection techniques, the phenolic trimethylsilyl group was exchanged for a dimethylalkylsilyl group, thus allowing for the determination of the type of hydroxyl group. These silylating agents have also been used in the structure elucidation of hydroxylated steroids using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry techniaues. REFERENCE
