Qualitative Analysis, without Sulfide ion, of Selected Cations Qualitativeanalysis of Selected 11cationscan be accomplished without the useaf Sulfide. Ions of the first groupnamely lead, mercurous and silver are precipitated as chlorides by hydrochlonic acid, analyzed and confirmed by the traditional procedure. Mercury (11). lead, bismuth, antimony, iron and aluminum are precipitated as hydroxides or oxide by ammonium hydroxide and ammonium chloride. Analysis of this precipitate and confirmation of the ions are carried out by well-known chemical reactions. The solution that remains after the separation of group two ions contains ions of group three as complexes of nickel, copper and zinc. These ions can be detected by known reactions. This Non-Sulfide Scheme like the Sulfide Scheme, is an excellent way to demonstrate the principles of equilibrium and teach the freshmen the fundamentals of Solution Chemistrv. The Non-Sulfide Scheme was found to work successfully ;hen administered and tested in the freshmen chemistry laboratory of the Tulane University. Paper presented at the fifteenth Annual Meeting in Miniature of the American Chemical Society, New Orleans, Lauisiana. Tulane University LA 70118
