Books view could be improved. The begin ning student is likely to be confused by several tables (page 146, for exam ple) t h a t include an unusual symbol for zero and an Ε without explanation or comment. The symbol beta is wide ly used elsewhere to denote overall formation constant in complexation; the use of beta (instead of alpha) to denote fraction in this same field is likely to lead to confusion. Unfortu nately, the section on potential is writ ten in such a way t h a t all the formal ism associated with ambivalent emf is required, whereas the advantages of the simplicity of the sign invariance of potential are ignored or misunder stood. The numerous Gaussian-type curves usually are drawn to show a point at the maximum rather than a smooth curve. For the purpose stated, this book should serve the student well, and at a reasonable price.
