At the inception of this new endeavor, a few words of comment are appropriate to place the function and scope of the PROCESS DESIGNAND DEVELOPMENT QUARTERLY among the increasing numbers of technical journals. A journal is produced to be read at least in part by each subscriber, as well as to comprise a portion of the permanent archives of technology and science. Among chemists and engineers concerned with chemical processing, there is a large body whose orientation is toward the processes of industrial chemistry, and only secondarily toward the properties and utility of the products. When the product specifications have been set, this group is concerned with the techniques for meeting them, with the development of processes and process equipment, and the operation and control of commercial plants at peak economy. These are the readers the editor will have in mind as he selects papers for this quarterly.
Such readers will be interested in : Design methods and concepts for processes and process equipment Empirical or semitheoretical correlations of data other than physical properties of pure substances in forms useful for design Experimental determination of design parameters other than physical and thermodynamic properties of pure substances Basic information on processing tools, their performance, scope, and utility Methods of integrating systems analysis and process control into process design and development Scale-up procedures and experimental process development techniques Process flowsheet data on chemical products in which the emphasis is on designing the process to produce a prespecified product. The traditional high standards of I&EC set a norm we shall maintain and strive to improve upon. Papers presenting novel concepts, sound and adequate experimental data, and incisive analysis will be welcomed as worthy of our busy readers' attention because of their solid contribution to advancing technology. We shall welcome your comments, advice, and criticism in our attempts to make this journal a vital component of your technical armament.
