Scientists and science teachers in col leges, universities, and nonprofit or ganizations have been invited by the National Science Foundation to submit proposals for the design of better lab oratory equipment for use in the nation's schools. Proposals judged meritorious will be supported by the foundation under a program designed to encourage the development of in expensive and practical tools for use in the laboratory phases of science instruc tion. Under the program, the founda tion will consider proposals for the design and construction of prototypes of improved laboratory equipment and for the development of new instruc tional materials for lecture demonstra tions, laboratory and field work for courses at secondary school and under graduate college levels in mathematics, astronomy, earth sciences, physical and biological sciences, and engineering. Proposals should clearly describe the work to be done, give the qualifications of the personnel involved, show how the proposed material will be evaluated and eventually made generally avail able, and present a detailed budget. Support under this program will NOT be provided for the purchase of equip ment for refurbishing school and college laboratories, or for commercial produc tion of equipment or materials. This is the second year of the pro gram; funds are somewhat limited and grants will be relatively small. Sug gestions for preparing proposals may be obtained from the Course Content Im provement Section, Division of Scien tific Personnel and Education, National
Science Foundation, Washington 25, D. C , and completed proposals are to be submitted to NSF before December 13, 1959. Grants will be announced during March 1960.
NSF Graduate Fellowships Applications for 1100 graduate and 125 postdoctoral fellowship awards are being received by the National Science Foundation. Fellowships are available in the mathematical, physical, medical, biological, and engineering sciences and some of the social sciences. Applicants, who must be American citizens, will be required to take the Graduate Record Examination. Ap praisal of applications will be made by panels selected by the National Academy of Sciences. NSF will make the final selection. Graduate fellowship stipends will range from $1800 to $2200 plus allow ances for fees, dependents, and travel. Postdoctoral stipends are $4500. De cember 22 is the deadline for post doctoral fellowship applications, and January 1 is the deadline for graduate fellowships. Selections will be an nounced on March 15. Details are available from the Fellowship Office, National Academy of Sciences, Wash ington 25, D. C.
N e w Chromatography Award The American Chemical Society Award in Chromatography and Elec trophoresis was announced by the Board of Directors of the ACS. Spon sor of the new award is Labline, Inc.
