Five Safety Rules Can A v e r t All Big Industrial Fires Every major industrial fire could have been avoided, if five fundamental rules h a d b e e n followed, says W . K. Ousley, vice president of Boston Manu facturers Mutual Fire Insurance Co.: 1. Use safe construction. This in cludes use of fire-resistant material and limiting undivided areas to 100,000 sq. ft. ( F r o m a fire standpoint, Ousley says that it doesn't make m u c h differ ence w h e t h e r a building is of brick, steel, concrete, or wood, as long as wooden walls and quick-burning boards or joists, roofs, and floors are avoided.) 2. Install complete automatic sprin kler system. 3 . Provide adequate supply of water. 4 . Organize, educate, and drill em ployees in fire protection and preven tion. When a plant is not operating, company should have a mature, ablebodied w a t c h m a n of common sense, not likely t o become rattled in an emergency. 5. Induce management to take ac tive part in making an organization safety conscious. A plant engineer can apply these rules, almost guaranteeing that cata strophic fires won't occur, Ousley says.

Company's severity rate, in terms of days lost from accidents per 1000 hours worked, was 0.31, lowest in the company in the past 15 years. During 1953, 13 of company's 2 8 plants operated without a major injury. Mound Laboratory in Miamisburg, Ohio, won the company's President's trophy in Group I. (Plants are divided into two groups according to size.) Current record is 1136 d a y s without a major injury, or almost 4.7 million man-hours. T h e lab also won the an nual G r o u p I safety improvement award. In Group II, the Trenton, Mich., plant posted the winning record—1395 uays, or over 3.0 million man-hours. This is t h e third time Trenton has won t h e award, thus giving t h e plant per m a n e n t possession of t h e award. T h e plant also won the improvement award in its category.
• Barrett Division, Allied Chemical & D y e announces that employees at its Frankford, Philadelphia, plant h a d worked over 2.2 million man-hours, and at its Grays Ferry, Philadelphia, plant, over 1.5 million man-hours, without a lost time accident. T h r e e other Barrett plants have also exceeded the 1 million man-hour mark. Total man-hours worked at these five plants without a lost time accident exceeds 7.6 million. • PhilSips Petroleum's Philtex Experi ment Station at Borger, Tex., com pleted on Jan. 4, 1954, 1 million con secutive man-hours of work without a disabling injury. Record began April 18, 1952, and is their second such achievement since October 1948. • Two ointments for protecting the skin against e x p o s u r e t o industrial irritants are available from Hygiene Re search. Clerex is a gel containing a modified carbohydrate g u m base which on drying forms a continuous strong elastic film. It is said to protect the skin against paints, varnishes, adhesives, plastics, lacquers, as well as various solvents used in chemical plants and in plastic plants for polymerizing plastics. Hydrepel-A and Hydrepel-S are creams which protect against water solutions and water-borne irritants by forming adherent water-insoluble coatings on the skin which are invisible, do not in terfere with tactile sensation and with stand normal washing.
