safest work, according to figures released last week b y the Manufacturing Chemists' Association, Inc. A record low of 4.56 injuries p e r million man-hours worked was achieved in 1950 by the association's m e m b e r companies, which account tor about 9 0 % of total U. S. chemical production. "This accident rate is less t h a n half t h e national average," A. G. Cranch, chairm a n of the association's safety committee said, "and lower than that of any other industry except communications." Chemical injury rates h a v e been s u b stantially below the average for all industry for m a n y years, according to Dr. Cranch, but "chemical plants have m a d e especially n o t a b l e progress in reducing industrial injuries since 1946." The a v e r a g e rate for t h e association's m e m b e r companies has d r o p p e d 40r/r during t h e past five years. Dr. Crandi attributes this record to improved safety measures a d o p t e d in the industry and to good cooperation by employees in observing safety rules and precautions. T h e Manufacturing Chemists' Association, Inc., announces publication of Chemical Safety Data Sheet SD-39 on Aqueous Hydrochloric Acid and Anhydrous H y d r o g e n Chloride. T h e bulletin is another in t h e series prepared by t h e association's General Safety Committee to provide essential information on safe use and h a n d l i n g of hazardous chemicals. Because of the wide application of h y d r o chloric acid and hydrogen chloride throughout industry, the manual is expected to b e o n e of the most popular in t h e MCA series. Since serious injury can b e caused by contact of H C l with the skin and eyes or by inhalation of vapors, the m a n u a l places much emphasis on the strict enforcement of precautions t o ensure complete personal safety of handlers. Use of proper protective equipment such as clothing a n d goggles and specific first aid a n d medical treatment are thoroughly discussed.
