S E M for large s a m p l e s The ESEM-2700 scanning electron microscope with a secondary electron detector is designed to provide an air atmosphere for nondestructive imaging of biological, semiconductor, and other samples. A 45° conical lens permits imaging of large samples at short working distances without the need for tilting and accommodates flat samples in a wide range of sizes, including 6 sq. in. semiconductor wafers, as well as liquids. Differential pumping allows the introduction of gases into the sample chamber at pressures up to 20 torr while maintaining high vacuum in the electron column. Gas or water vapor can be used to amplify the secondary electron signal and can be chosen either to stabilize or to react with the sample during observation. Wet, oily, or nonconductive specimens can be observed at high resolution without dehydration or the need for coating

INSTRUMENTATION TOFMS-based GC detector The FCD fast chromatographic detector is a time-of-flight mass analyzer with an integrating transient recorder designed for use with a gas chromatograph. It provides up to 1000 full mass range EI spectra per second and has sensitivity down to picogram or subpicogram levels. Meridian Analytical S y s t e m s 1 4 1 4

MS "Selected Abstracts in Biotechnology and Biomedical Mass Spectrometry" features abstracts of articles published in the past five years on biochemical applications of MS using VG quadrupole, sector, and time-of-flight mass spectrometers. Author, keyword, and instrument indexes are included. Fisons • 419

HPLC the sample with metal vapor, which provides a conductive surface for conventional SEM but destroys the sample for further use or analysis. Cooling and heating stages allow for observation of phase changes, crystallization, and freezing and thawing processes. Other optional accessories include compression and tension sample stages as well as a micromanipulator/injector. ElectroScan • 416

SFE gravimetry The SFE Gravimetric Analyzer is designed for direct process monitoring and quality control. It performs rapid gravimetric extraction of such analytes as total fats and oils in foods, non-ionic surfactants in soaps and detergents, and plasticizers and additives in polymers. Two vessels can be extracted simultaneously, and parameters can be controlled and customized according to the sample matrix. Suprex • 417

Gel electrophoresis Personal Densitometer QC system is designed for quantitative analysis of electrophoretic gels, blots, and autoradiography films. Laser optics and 12-bit digital integration provide densitometry from 0 to 3.5 OD at a resolution of 50 pm. Windowsbased software includes performance validation features and provides documentation for QC/QA, methods development, and process development laboratories. Molecular Dynamics 1 4 1 5 270 A

Portable near-IR SpectroChem 100 portable near-IR spectrophotometer, about the size of a notebook computer, is designed for extended field testing with monochromator optics, shock mountings, a separate battery pack, and a lamp rated to last 10,000 h. The instrument scans from 1100 to 2200 nm and accommodates optional fiber-optic probes for remote sampling. AnalytiChem B 4 1 8

Application notes feature U.S. Pharmacopeia methods for the determination of penicillin V, ampicillin, acyclovir, guaifenesin, and other drugs by reversed-phase HPLC. Suggestions are included for improving performance in cases where higher resolution, reduced tailing, or faster sample throughput are needed. The Separations Group • 420

Pyrolysis GC Application note describes the structural analysis of a series of steroid compounds by pyrolysis GC using the Pyroprobe and a dual-flame ionization detector. Effects of stereochemical and structural differences on the thermal disintegration patterns are discussed and chromatograms are presented. CDS Analytical • 421

CE Application note describes the use of CZE with indirect photometric detection for the determination of small non-UV absorbing anions and cations. Examples include the determination of metal cations in mineral water, yogurt, and wine; organic acids in beer; and small anions in tap water, snow, and urine. The note contains sample electropherograms, calibration curves, and tables. Hewlett Packard • 422 For more information, please circle t h e appropriate numbers on one of our Reader Service Cards.
