W HKN preparing acetylenic perox ides, strict temperature controls may mean t h e difference between a success ful synthesis and an explosion, accord ing to Dr. Nicholas A. Milas of Massa chusetts Institute of Technology and Dr. Orvilîe L. Mageli of Wallace & Tiernan's Lucidol division. Since interest in these peroxides has sharpened, several chemists have re ported fires that started while they were using t h e Milas-Mageli acetylenic peroxide synthesis, reported in JACS, 75, 1472 ( 1 9 5 2 ) . T h e authors, there fore, wish to emphasize the importance of temperature in the reaction.
Acetylenic peroxides are relatively stable at room temperature, they ex plain, b u t this stability should not bo contused with shock sensitivity. Sonic of the dihydroperoxides are shock sen sitive in the pure state, t h e authors warn, a n d n e e d to b e handled with ex treme care. During the peroxide synthesis, Dr. Milas a n d Dr. Mageli say, the reaction mixture thickens, a n d efficient stirring a n d cooling a r e necessary to maintain the t e m p e r a t u r e within 5 ° C. If lo calized heating occurs, acid-initiated decomposition may lead to spontaneous ignition. But temperature control can b e simplified, they a d d , if an inert sol vent or other xmreactive material is used to dilute the product. They describe such an inert solvent system in their m e t h o d of preparing 3,8-dimethyl-4,6deeacliyn-3,8-dihydroperoxide in JACS, 7 5 , 5 9 7 0 (1953)'. ■
Like the fabled Phoenix, Norton NITRIDES acquire their wonder-working capabilities in intense heat. In electric furnaces they are chemically formed and physically "tempered" to the require ments of modern industry. Here versatile BORON NITRIDE attains the properties of a heat-resistant lubri cant, an anti-sticking agent, a high volt age and temperature dielectric and .an excellent thermal insulator. TITANIUM NITRIDE develops characteristics ideally suited to the requirements of special crucibles, components and cermets, par ticularly resistant to attack by molten media at elevated temperatures. Norton NITRIDES have many different applications. Get facts that may benefit your own processing problems. Write for booklet.

φ Plastic Panels Survive Blast W h e n an explosion rocked Hooker Chemical's Niagara Falls, Ν . Υ., plant, this building, close to the blast, lost only a few glass w i n d o w panes. Its Hetron polyester resin panels either flexed and sprang back in place or were forced loose from their bolts and dropped to the ground intact. T h e explosion leveled the concrete block, organic chemicals building w h e r e it occurred, Hooker says. Most nearby buildings were damaged, a n d personnel i n the area were endangered by flying glass, concrete, and other debris, according to the company.
