Dow Corning has introduced Pyrobond into the long Hst of materials and combinations of materials which have been offered through the years to protect pipelines against corrosive effects of soil and weather. The new entry joining the group is an epoxysilicone coating. A fusion-bonded coating, Pyrobond is based on an epoxy resin with sili cone constituents. This combination gives what Dow Corning describes as a hard, tough coating, which is easily applied and which cures rapidly. Pyrobond is being distributed by Permac, Inc., of Tulsa, Okla. Mills now equipped to apply it are H. C. Price Co. (Philadelphia) and Utili ties Coating Service, Inc. (Niles, Ohio). The market for coatings which can be used in pipelines for gathering, transmitting, and distributing gas, water, or oil is about $40 million per year. However, only about 10 to 15% of this market is open to thin-mil coatings. Most of the thin-mil coat ings market is taken by extruded-plas tic coatings. Most commonly used as coatings
are coal tars, asphalts, and waxes. These materials are usually put on in thicknesses of about 60 mils or more. Available for many years, these materials dominate the market for pipeline coatings. Finding increasing use, however, are thin-mil or thin-film coatings. These coatings are applied in thick nesses of less than 30 mils. They in clude protective tapes, extruded plas tic, and fusion-bonded plastic. Most widely employed are extruded-plastic coatings. Protective tapes are normally poly vinyl chloride or polyethylene, and can be applied both in the field and in the mill. Extruded plastic coatings can be mill applied only. A good ex ample is Republic Steel's X-Tru-Coat plastic-lined pipe. First an elastic adhesive base coat is applied hot to the pipe. Then high-density poly ethylene is extruded on the base coat. Fusion-bonded plastic coatingscoatings applied by heating the pipe and contacting it with resin powder which fuses to the pipe—are also limited to mill application. Epoxy resin is generally used. I f you want c h e l a t i o n a t low cost consider t h e s e f a c t s about Du Pont Hydroxyacetic Acid Inexpensive Du Pont Hydroxyacetic Acid (also called Glycolic Acid) is one of the lowest priced chelation agents known — only $0.073/lb. bulk, f.o.b. Belle, W. Va. Yet it can often be used to supplement or replace more expensive chelating agents to reduce your processing or cleaning costs — or to provide the basic component for a profitable proprietary cleaning compound. Versatile Du Pont Hydroxyacetic Acid complexes with many metal ions — iron, magnesium, calcium, barium, strontium, copper, lead, and zinc, for example. The chelation effect of Hydroxyacetic Acid is typified by this simple reaction to form a complex chromium salt: o=c Crm+3H0-CH,-C00H-
4 - *
•3H+
CH 2 -
Hydroxyacetic Acid is also b a c tericidal, scale-dissolving, low in corrosiveness, easy-to-handle, and nonvolatile. And, since it's chloride-f ree,it is especiallyuseful for cleaning stainless steel equipment where chloride stress corrosion would be a problem. Synergistic If it's not as strong as your present chelating agent, you can often mix hydroxyacetic with other che-lating acids to get an economical replacement. At certain mix ratios, depending on the use, hydroxyacetic shows an unusual synergis-
tic effect with citric, gluconic, and some other hydroxy carboxylic acids. Proven Here are just some of the many areas where hydroxyacetic acid's chelat i o n and other p r o p e r t i e s h a v e proven economically sound:
In equipment cleaners, it dissolves acid soluble materials and keeps them in solution by chelation. In water wells, it dissolves and chelates iron deposits for easy removal and controls iron bacteria. In ore benification, it provides flotation and separation of zinc, lead, copper, molybdenum, quartz, silicates and phosphates. In concrete products, it slows hydration rates, leading to greater strength and/or savings in cement costs. For basic product information send the coupon, indicating your area of interest. For an evaluation sample or help on a specific application, please write on your letterhead.

years, 3M has been marketing a powder epoxy, called Scotchkote 101, for coating pipeline. Recently, epoxy formulator Armstrong Products Co. of Warsaw, Ind., began offering an epoxy powder pipeline coating under the trade name Vibro Flo. Other resins are moving into the picture. Jones & Laughlin Steel applies a powder polyvinyl chloride, called Jalbond, to pipeline at its Aliquippa, Pa., works. Supplier of the coating is Polymer Corp., of Reading, Pa. Enjay Chemical's Buton, a butadienestyrene copolymer, is used to coat pipeline. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has a powder polyester coating called Flexclad. Best Properties. The result of nearly two years of research, Dow Coming's new epoxy-silicone coating combines the best properties of each material, according to Paul Grunder, sales manager for building products. Dow Corning hasn't disclosed what the composition of the new coating is, however. Epoxies give a coating which is tough and resists abrasion; silicones give one which is durable and flows on smoothly. Smooth flow means even and easy application of the coating to the pipe. Pipe coated with Pyrobond can be pushed or driven into the ground without peeling or tearing the coating, Mr. Grunder says. The coating also resists corrosion. Cathodic disbondment tests, for instance, show no undercutting at 6 volts. Concentrated sodium hydroxide and 10% solutions of strong acids don't affect the coating. It is serviceable from —20° to 275° F. Adhesion strength of the coating is about 3000 p.s.i., which is comparable to conventional fusionbonded epoxy coatings. To apply the coating, pipe is heated to between 420° and 440° F. Then the pipe is brought in contact with Pyrobond via either an electrostatic- or fluidized-bed approach, and the powder fuses to the pipe. The coating can be applied 7 to 10 mils thick, as desired. Cure of the coating, completed in about 20 seconds after the pipe leaves the coating chamber, is as fast as for conventional epoxy coatings, according to Mr. Grunder. Dow Corning is producing Pyrobond at its Midland, Mich., plant. Price of the coating is competitive with other fusion-bonded pipeline coatings, Mr. Grunder says. C 30

Here are 6 applications for organotins
Corning Extends pH Electrode Line Corning Glass Works has added 11 new electrodes to its line of pH meter equipment. The new electrodes are available in six basic types: silver billet, platinum, semimicro combina tion, miniature pH, miniature refer ence, and mercury internal pH. The silver billet electrodes xare coated with silver halides for use as silver/silver halide electrodes. They have an operating range of —5° to 100° C. The platinum electrodes also operate in this range. The combination electrode offers the advantages of Coming's triple-pur pose glass membrane and all-glass construction, the company says. This electrode covers the range from 0 to 14 pH at 0° to 100° C. The miniature electrodes cover 0 to 14 pH. One of these electrodes has a silver/silver halide internal reference and the other has a mercury internal reference. Both operate from —5° to 100° C. The mercury internal elec trode is designed for null-balance pH meters. Miniature reference electrodes use calomel internal elements and fiber junctions. They can be used to make electrochemical/potential measure ments. Ε 84

Do you have another? Chances are it's one in which you are getting some results with another organometallic, or perhaps with a metal soap. But an organotin might give a higher yield, or a more specific reaction, or better coordination. (These are leading reasons why organotins are used in the six applications above.) So give organotins a try. Write for data sheets and samples, indicating your interest. We'll send you the most suitable organotin derivatives.

The stabilizer included in Diamond Alkali's formulation to produce foodgrade polyvinyl chloride bottles (C&EN, April 26, page 50) is listed in Sub-part F of the current food addi tive listing of the Food and Drug Ad ministration. The stabilizer, which isn't made by Diamond, is part of the company's Dacovin 3021, a formula tion for use in continuous extrusion equipment designed for powder proc essing of rigid PVC.
The first IBM System/360 delivered to any customer is now in operation. The System/360 Model 40 will serve as the hub of a regional data center for Globe Exploration Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Shell Oil Co. The unit will be used in screening data in the search for new oil fields. Engineering and research data can be transmitted over telephone lines in machine lan guage from Globe's research center in El Paso, Tex., to the System/360 in
Midland, Tex. An IBM 1050 data communication system is used at each location to send and receive the information.
A new food color in water-dispersible form has been added to the list of available colors by Hoffmann-La Roche. Apo-carotenal, a companion product to the forms of beta-carotene, is dark and purplish-black in color. It has a vitamin A activity of 120,000 units per gram. Beadlets of the material disperse readily with stirring in warm water at 130° F.
A photo plastic recording process developed at General Electric in 1963, has been improved by extending its spectral response from blue light only to include light in the visible and near-infrared spectrum. New materials recently developed for the process are capable of dry-heat development, erasure, and re-use. Two of the many possible applications for the new materials are near-infrared photography for medical diagnosis, and photography with laser beams which emit red light.
NEW CHEMICALS Chromium trichloride is now available from Research Organic Chemical Co., of Sun Valley, Calif. The chemical is used in vapor plating of chromium metal and in the preparation of sponge chromium. It is also used as a selective polymerization catalyst for alpha olefins, and as an intermediate for organic chromium compounds. C 32
Flame-sprayed nickel-chromium coating is now available from Metco, Inc., of Westbury, N.Y. The self-fluxing alloy, Metco 14E powder, produces a hard, dense, corrosion-resistant coating, the company says. Metco adds that these coatings are being used extensively in oil fields to coat polished rod liners. The coatings can be ground, machined, or belt sanded. C33 Glutaraldehyde (50%) of biologicalgrade purity is now available from Fisher Scientific Co., of Pittsburgh, Pa. This aldehyde of glutaric acid has twice as many reactive groups as formaldehyde, therefore fixation is
far faster and more complete than with formaldehyde, the company says. C34
Polyvinyl acetate homopolymer emulsion which combines high water resistance and excellent tack and machining properties is available from Shawinigan Resins Corp., of Springfield, Mass. The emulsion, designated resin D-865, is recommended by the company for use in adhesives where speed of tack and water resistance is essential. The nondispersible emulsion contains both large and fine particles. Thus, the company says, the emulsion can also be used where improvements in tackiness, machining, and over-all stability are essential in the fine-particle-size waterresistant emulsions currently used. C35
Urethane foam insulation for special cryogenic applications has been developed by the CPR division of Upjohn Co. at Torrance, Calif. The material, designated CPR Series 200, is a two-component, polyester fluorocarbon-blown rigid foam. It can be used in environment as low as —450° F., the company says. C 36
A glass tinting formula has been developed by Du Pont and will be available through dealers franchised by Sun-X International, Inc. The Houston, Tex., distributor says the tinting is applied to the inside of glass to control heat, fade, and glare caused by rays of the sun. C 37
Urethane elastomer, based on a polyester-MDI-prepolymer that can be poured at room temperature, is now available from The Upjohn Co., of Torrance, Calif. The elastomer was designed to replace rubber, plastics, leather, or metal in applications requiring maximum abrasion resistance. C38
