Solvent Removal with a Glass and Metal Rotary Evaporator In the work up of organic reaction mixtures containing light and air sensitive compounds a glass and metal rotary evaporator has proved useful. The apparatus illustrated in the photograph includes commercial Rinco equipment with added design modifications. The major modification consists of a glass T with two female joints and a male ball joint. The evaporator and condenser are connected by the T joints. The solvent collection flask has a female ball joint by which it is clamped to the T. The main advantages of this unit over others illustrated in the literature are simplicity and ease of ope~ation.'.~The unit utilizes a standard condenser which if broken is readily replaced. The glass T offers the least challenge to any glass-worker. A leash provides insurance that product is not contaminated by water fmm a water bath when the vacuum is removed. The unit has proved successful in the removal of solvents in the preparation of mono- and bis-ethers of hydroquinone.
