Some quick, thick tricks with Cab-0 SiL Here's a complete bag of thickening tricks. It's Cab-O-Sil. A fumed silica made up of submicron particles, fused together to form chainlike aggregates. Dispersed in a liquid, these aggregates use surface hydroxyl groups to link themselves together.
Mix Cab-O-Sil into gun-applied adhesives and sealants to ward off slumping on vertical or angled surfaces. (Cab-O-Sil not only thickens an adhesive used to encapsulate electronic components —it gives the adhesive shock-absorbing resiliency that dampens harmful vibration.)
The result is a three dimensional network that physically slows down liquid flow—to whatever speed your process or product works at best. Add enough Cab-O-Sil to a liquid, and you've got a gel. Yet when you spray, brush, squeeze or lay-up the gel on a surface, the particle chains instantly uncouple, and it becomes a free-flowing liquid again. When the liquid comes t p ~ rest, the particle chains close raiijte^aiy& you're back to a gel. That's thixotrop^^ thickening with a foolproof mémof
Add Cab-O-Sil to a hair coloring kit powder, so that in solution it stirs to the right drip-free creaminess—can be applied to highlight single strands in a hairdo. Formulate viscosity-stable lipstick that retains its shape, even under a blazing Bahamas sun. V*Mix Cab-O-Sil into a ^ lotion, to make it cling gently to a soft shoulder— yet turn to an instantlyabsorbed liquid when rubbed into the skin.
Stick with Cab-O-Sil to g i v e ^ M sensitive, wet lay-up and hot-rœm adhesives better tack, andtorotOT^j their viscosity over a wide rafÎpr of processing temperature! Use it in neoprene am urethane adhesives to prevS!B adhesive "strike-through" on exposed îaWfic οι other porous surfaces. Get a thinner y ^ vis cosity-stable adhesive film for bondmg lami nates—prevent oozing and adhesive waste.
With as little as 1% Cab-O-Sil, thicken offset, flexographic, rotogravure and lettgtpress inks. The fine-particle network swings open to let t h e ink distribute evenly on t h e rollers, t h e n slams shut to guard t h e viscosity. So there's no pressroom misting or flying. Ink gloss is preserved, because t h e higher viscosity reduces over-absorption of ink components on high porosity papers. Use Cab-O-Sil to thicken ballpoint pen pressure-cartridge inks, so t h a t t h e shear force of t h e ballpoint thins out t h e ink as you write. (The astronauts find this h a n d y for non-gravity notemaking.)
It's a n easy trick to pick t h e grade of Cab-O-Sil t h a t gives you t h e most efficient, economical resin system. Cab-O-Sil thickens dozens of other products —paints, aerosols, acids, coatings, foods, lubricants, soaps, polishes. Now . . . like to t h i n k u p a few quick, thick tricks of your own? Cab-O-Sil makes sagging and draining disappear during RP hand lay-up, spray-up or molding operations for appliances, furniture, shower stalls, boats, truck hoods, dune buggy bodies. Once thickened with Cab-O-Sil, ^ laminating or gel coat polyester resins ^ ^ can be applied in precise, uniform ^mà thicknesses. Cab-O-Sil widens the ^ range of resin choices, because it ^ can thicken lower viscosity resins ^A that have superior wetting properties. ^ A
