C l o s e d - c i r c u i t air separation is of proved advantage in reduction processes. Result is a better, more uniform product. Grinding mills perform at top efficiency, output frequently increases as much as 300%, power costs drop as much as 50%. P r e c i s e s e p a r a t i o n of all dry powdered materials. Donald M. Kendall, president of Pepsi-Cola International, points out in American Soft Drink Journal that in Russia the range of soft drink flavors, while not encompassing kola, is "nothing short of phenomenal." Nearly all have a fruit base, he reports, with apple flavor being by far the most popular among carbonated drinks. Pear, peach, currant, apricot, and plum—in addition to a generally ever popular orange— do well. Nonfruit flavors: coffee, cream soda, honey, and bread. In fact the bread-flavored drink, kvas, is said to be the Russian national favorite. Based upon a combination of black bread, barley, rye, malt, and sugar, it looks like beer, says Kendall. And besides being a drink in itself, it doubles as a base for a cold soup . . . While it's not all vodka on the Volga, one favorite Russian "prescription" is a bright, cheerful carbonated tomato-and-spice concoction,

bloody but nonalcoholic, and might be described as a Moscow Mary. Competition Tightening

The number of bottlers is continually dropping, despite rising production. Merger and acquisition are speeded by the need for greater production and more efficient distribution. From some 7300 local bottlers across the country in 1925, the number has faded to 4600. This competition is looming in the carbonated soft-drink area from two directions: canned products and instant drinks. Though introduced about 10 years ago, the canned product has been stymied by the industry's big investments in bottling equipment. Can manufacturers sense a breakthrough this year, however, like that in the brewery business after World War I I : Sales of canned pop for the first part of this year were up 42.9% above the same period in 1958. Food stores, too, prefer cans—no breakage, no returns to bother with, no storage problems with empties—and today they handle one half of all carbonated beverages sold. Latest competition to hit the pop market nationally is effervescent tablets or powders for instant carbonated drinks. These dissolve and release C 0 2 when water is poured on

Sturtevant Air Separators do a mechanical job of winnowing. Precise control of whirlwind air currents and centrifugal force results in the desired size being lifted into fines cone, oversize falling into tailings cone. A 16 ft. Sturtevant, for example, has taken a feed rate of 800 tph, containing only a small percentage of desired fines, and delivered 30 tph 90% 200 mesh, recirculating the oversize through the grinding circuit.
