ACS NEWS Progress Report Number 43
Summary of activities of the Committee on Professional Training for 1969 C. Walling, Chairman G. A. Berchtold W. H. Eberhardt H. S. Gutowsky E. L. Haenisch E. L King
The semiannual meetings of the committee during 1969 were held in Minneapolis in April and New York City in September in conjunction with the regular national meetings of the Society. An open meeting was also arranged in New York City to permit group discussion with the committee by department chairmen and others on matters of mutual interest. Open meetings will continue to be scheduled annually in the fall of each year. Department chairmen and individual staff members have frequently requested opportunities to talk with committee members during the national meeting. Such individual conferences were scheduled on the Tuesday of the national meeting in New York City last September with the appointments being made through the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Society. This plan will be continued in the future, and those attending the national meeting and wishing to talk individually with the secretary or other committee member should request an appointment through the Office of the Executive Secretary after arrival at the national meeting. Undergraduate education in chemistry
The committee met with representatives from 34 institutions during the year for discussion of the programs of undergraduate education in chemistry at the schools concerned. Those conferences involving representatives from the nonapproved institutions resulted in 14 formal evaluations. The number of schools on the approved list increased to 403 at the end of 1969, representing an addition of 17 schools to the list during the year. Table III reports information for each approved institution with respect to the number of certified students receiving bachelor's degrees for the period July 1, 1968, to June 30, 1969. Information for noncertified graduates is also listed. The numbers of M.S. and Ph.D. degrees conferred are also listed. Table IV provides similar information from institutions approved by the Society as a result of their accreditation in chemical engineering by AIChE and ECPD. Two-year colleges
Reference was made in Progress Report Number 42 (C&EN, March 24, 1969, page 75) to the conference arranged at the April 1969 meeting of the committee with representatives from the two-year colleges. These discussions were most fruitful and have resulted in a statement which will appear shortly in C&EN and which will be available in booklet form for those who are interested. The statement represents the joint opinion of the Committee and the Two Year College Chemistry Conference Planning Committee with regard to education in chemistry at two-year colleges for those students planning to transfer to four-year institutions to complete the requirements for the baccalaureate degree with a major in chemistry.

Minimum standards
The committee continues to give serious thought to the suitability of the present statement of the minimum standards in view of the many changes and improvements during recent years in the approach and content of undergraduate curriculums in chemistry. The present minimum standards were published in 1965 and represented a modest revision of those established in 1962. In the interim, chemists have continued to rely even more heavily on theory and instrumentation. There has been increasing interest in the interdisciplinary fields in which further training in chemistry is necessary, and there has been a growing development of integrated courses, particularly in the laboratory. Of particular concern to the committee is the problem of providing greater flexibility in course structure and in choices of advanced level material but, at the same time, ensuring adequate breadth of training and a high level of accomplishment for those students who wish to complete an undergraduate program at the baccalaureate level. In order to assist the committee in its study, the department chairman at each approved school has been invited to submit comments and suggestions. Each has also received a copy of an informal report, prepared but not published by a panel sponsored by the Advisoiy Committee on College Chemistry, which suggests a topical approach to the teaching of chemistry at the undergraduate level. The responses from the various department chairmen to this will be studied in depth by the committee, along with various suggestions and information about other approaches which the departments may have found effective for the teaching of modern concepts of chemistry. Attention will also be given in the study to the recommendations presented by the last ACS Biennial Education Conference. No major revisions in the minimum standards are anticipated until after this study has been completed.
ACS Directory of Graduate Research
The 1969 edition of the Directory of Graduate Research will be available for distribution early in 1970. Complimentary copies will be mailed to each participating graduate department and to the chairman of the chemistry department at other institutions offering a baccalaureate degree with a major in chemistry. Copies of the directory may be purchased at $10 per copy from the Special Issues Sales Department, American Chemical Society, 1155—16th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. In order to eliminate the financial deficit incurred by the Society with respect to publishing previous editions of the directory, the price of the 1969 edition was increased to reflect the actual cost per copy of publication. The participating graduate departments were also requested to consider a page charge contribution of $10 per page, and the committee is pleased with the cooperation it has received MARCH 23, 1970 C&EN

in this respect. Such contributions are expected to cover the cost of the complimentary distribution of the directory. Planning for Graduate Work in Chemistry
Approximately 700 copies of this booklet have been sold during the past year. The booklet continues to offer helpful suggestions for students considering graduate study in chemistry and includes a selection of typical questions in analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry and which have been found in recent Graduate Record Examinations given by a number of representative institutions. Copies of the booklet may be obtained at 50 cents each, prepaid, from the Secretary of the Committee on Professional Training, American Chemical Society, 343 State St., Rochester, N.Y. 14650. Changes in committee status and personnel
Harold G. Walsh, a staff member in the Office of the Educational Secretary of the Society in Washington, was appointed assistant secretary of the Committee on Professional Training on Jan. 1. In this capacity he assists the committee in much of the work and correspondence associated with maintaining the list of approved institutions and the various certification and triennial reports. Marjorie Bragg, who has been on the staff of the secretary of the committee since 1952, has retired but continues on a part-time basis to assist the committee at the national meetings. The committee is, inded, appreciative of her able and dedicated service for more than 17 years and her continuing interest and effort in its work. List of approved schools
The Committee on Professional Training recognizes that there are many institutions having adequate instruction in chemistry which are not on the Society's list of approved schools. These institutions may offer excellent education in chemistry within their stated educational objectives or to the extent permitted by their particular circumstances without professing to prepare students for professional work in chemistry upon their graduation with the bachelor's degree. Nevertheless, they send many of these students to graduate schools to complete their professional education and these students often make excellent records in their graduate work. The committee feels strongly that this type of institution is very valuable in the American system of education. Graduate schools and employers of chemists will continue to recognize that high-quality students, well educated in the elementary principles of chemistry, graduate from colleges not on the approved list of the Society. There may be departments of chemistry in schools not on the approved list of the American Chemical Society which meet the minimum standards of the Society but are unaware that a request for study or reconsideration by the Committee on Professional Training must be initiated by the presidents of their respective institutions. The committee is glad to cooperate with such departments if invited to do so. Students who receive the bachelor's degree from institutions in the following list and who are certified by the department chairman as having fulfilled the minimum requirements for the professional education of chemists adopted by the American Chemical Society are eligible for admission as members of the Society following graduation and after two years of active participation in chemical or chemical engineering work. Students who are graduates from other programs will be eligible for admission as members after five years of active participation in chemical or chemical engineering work. If students or graduates are not eligible to become members, they may still apply for admission as associate members. 60 C&EN MARCH 23, 1970
