T h e y will pick up t h i s personal experie n c e d u r i n g t h e s u m m e r b y w o r k i n g in laboratories o n g o i n g research projects. A N a t i o n a l S c i e n c e F o u n d a t i o n prog r a m — R e s e a r c h for T e a c h e r T r a i n i n g m a k e s it p o s s i b l e . In t h e N S F p r o g r a m , h i g h school and college science teachers with good scientific backgrounds will become b e t t e r a c q u a i n t e d \\ - -h t h e n a t u r e of research w h i l e w o r k i n g u n d e r exp e r i e n c e d research scientists i n c o l l e g e laboratories. Their l a b jobs will b e s u p p l e m e n t e d b y s e m i n a r s a n d lectures o n research m e t h o d s a n d a d v a n c e s . N S F , as s p o n s o r of t h e p r o g r a m , b e lieves these courses c a n a d d meaning and enthusiasm to science teaching. Fifty-four c o l l e g e s a n d u n i v e r s i t i e s , a c t i v e in r e s e a r c h , h a v e grants from N S F t o t a l i n g $ 8 0 0 , 0 0 0 t o finance t h e s u m m e r s t u d i e s . T h e t e a c h e r s w h o att e n d will b e c h o s e n b y t h e i n d i v i d u a l s c h o o l s in t h e p r o g r a m o n t h e basis of their ability t o u s e t h e r e s e a r c h experie n c e in f u t u r e t e a c h i n g a s s i g n m e n t s . T h e y will r e c e i v e s t i p e n d s u p t o $ 7 5 a w e e k d u r i n g their courses plus all o w a n c e s for travel a n d d e p e n d e n t s . Projects offered run from s i x t o 1 2 w e e k s : t h e y i n c l u d e research in c h e m istry, c h e m i c a l e n g i n e e r i n g , b i o c h e m i s try, p h y s i c s , b i o l o g y , m a t h e m a t i c s , a s tronomy, a n d psychology. Besides t h e colleges listed here, 2 2 others in t h e N S F p r o g r a m offer s u m m e r r e s e a r c h p r o j e c t s for h i g h s c h o o l t e a c h e r s . T h e s e are i n b i o l o g y , c h e m istry, e n g i n e e r i n g , g e o l o g y , m a t h , a n d physics. National Science Foundation, W a s h i n g t o n 2 5 , D . C , will furnish a c o m p l e t e list o f t h e p r o j e c t s . I n q u i r i e s a n d a p p l i c a t i o n s for t h e t e a c h e r - r e s e a r c h projects s h o u l d b e s e n t p r o m p t l y to t h e directors of t h e programs at participating schools.
