The Chemistry Awards Symposium is held annually to recognize the outstanding recipients of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Unrestricted Grants in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Graduate Fellowships in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, the Princeton University Bristol-Myers Squibb Endowed Graduate Fellowships in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and the American Chemical Society Graduate Fellowships in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry (sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb). These awards are designed to highlight and support innovative academic research in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. Bristol-Myers Squibb is proud to announce that Professor M. Christina White of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the recipient of the 2008 Bristol-Myers Squibb Unrestricted Grant in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. Professor White was born in Athens, Greece. She received a B.A. in Biochemistry from Smith College. After a brief stint in the biology graduate program at Johns Hopkins University, she began her doctoral studies in chemistry in 1993 under the direction of Professor Gary Posner as an ACS predoctoral fellow. After an NIH postdoctoral fellowship in Professor Eric Jacobsen’s labs at Harvard University in 1999, she joined the faculty there in 2002. In 2005, she joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Professor White’s research group is focused on the discovery, development, and study of predictable and highly selective C—H functionalization methods and their strategic use in streamlining the process of complex molecule synthesis.
