...ti*" VERSENE* CHELATES CATIONS Before you can chelate foreign metallic ions in solutions you must have a powerful chelating agent such as Versene. This is a c o m p o u n d that will inactivate cations with the formation of inner r i n g structures in the molecule. It makes the metallic ion become part of the rings. T h i s is a valuable t h i n g to k n o w because it will prevent all k i n d s of contamination caused by cations. PREFERENTIAL CHELATION W h e n Versene is added t o a mixture of various metallic ions chelation will be preferential. T h a t is, o n e metal will be complexed before another. W h e n the first is exhausted the second will be inactivated and the process will g o o n until either metallic i o n s o r V e r s e n e are used up.
