RECO JULY 1 1 . 1969* l,5-Methano-7-methoxy-2,3,4,.Vtetrahydro-lH-2-benzazepine (t) and its N-methyl derivative Q) (B-norbenzomorph&ru) have been synthesized from 5-methoxyindan-l-one-3-aoetic acid (A) via the oxime(7)which was. converted to the amino acid(7).Cyclization was effected by carbodiimidea to the lactam(t)which was reduced to (•), N-methylation of which gave ( l ) . Both @ a n d 0 have analgetic activity, the former, half that of codeine, and ( l ) was found to be comparable to codeine.
