2. Subject M a t t e r a n d M a n u s c r i p t Classes. T h e J o u r n a l invites n e w a n d original c o n t r i b u t i o n s , n o t previously published, o n researches i n organic c h e m i s t r y . Articles are t o b e comprehensive a n d critical a c c o u n t s of work i n a given field. ÏTotes a r e t o b e brief, concise a c c o u n t s of studies of smaller scope. C o m m u n i c a t i o n s t o t h e E d i t o r afford a m e c h a n i s m for p r e s e n t i n g significant a d v a n c e s i n t h e field which w a r r a n t immediate publication. Timeliness a n d significance are essential r e q u i r e m e n t s . I n general, t h e length should n o t exceed 500 w o r d s ; i t is recognized t h a t in s o m e cases a n increase i n length m a y b e necessary. Interpretive r e v i e w s of existing d a t a which present n e w viewpoints a r e acceptable •whereas reviews of t h e p u r e compilation t y p e a r e n o t . Suggestions b y a u t h o r s w i t h respect t o referees for their m a n u s c r i p t s will b e a p p r e c i a t e d .

B o t h literature citations a n d explanatory notes are included i n footnotes, a n d m u s t therefore b e n u m b e r e d i n one consecutive series. I n t h e t e x t , footnotes a r e indicated as u n p a r e n t h e s i z e d superscripts. T h e footnotes m a y b e placed, suitably offset, following t h e line of t e x t i n which t h e y a r e cited, o r t h e y m a y b e g r o u p e d i n n u m e r i c a l order a t t h e e n d of t h e m a n u s c r i p t . A footnote giving t h e n a m e a n d address of t h e a u t h o r t o w h o m inquiries should be d i rected m a y b e included if s u c h i n f o r m a t i o n is n o t obvious from t h e heading. Abbreviations of j o u r n a l s should b e t h o s e used b y Chemical Abstracts (see " L i s t of Periodicals A b s t r a c t e d b y Chemical A b s t r a c t s " ) .
