NEW BOOKS Index to the Literature on Speetrochemical Analysis Part IV, 1 9 5 1 1955. Bourdon F. Scribner and William F. Meggers, iii + 314 pages. American Society for Testing Mate rials, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia 3, Pa. 1959. $6.50. This book, sponsored by ASTM Com mittee E-2 on Emission Spectroscopy, is a continuation of a series of biblio graphical surveys of the literature on emission spectrochemical analysis. Previous parts covered 1920 through 1939, with 1467 references; 1940 through 1945, with 1044 references; and 1946 through 1950, with 1264 refer ences. This part contains 1879 refer ences plus 12 new references that were not listed for previous periods. The abstracts are largely quoted ver batim from Chemical Abstracts, but there are occasional abridged or direct quotations from other publications. The source of the abstract is indicated following each reference. Although efforts were made toward completeness, reference to papers containing only a few qualitative results have generally been omitted. Infrared Absorption Spectra. Index for 1945-1957. Herbert M. Hershenson. xvi + 111 pages. Academic Press Inc., I l l Fifth Ave., N e w Y o r k 3 , N . Y . 1959. $7. This volume contains about 16,000 references to published infrared a b sorption spectra in 33 i m p o r t a n t Ameri can and E u r o p e a n journals, and one book. These references indicate the journal, volume, and page where an actual spectrum of the compound is re produced. F o r m a n y of the compounds a number of references will be found, while for others there m a y be only one. T h e index covers the literature from 1945 to 1957, inclusive, and it is ex pected t h a t subsequent literature will be covered in a supplementary index. T h e author points out t h a t , because of the great difficulties involved, t h e vol ume is by no means a complete index to all infrared absorption spectra p u b lished during the period covered. H e adds, however, t h a t the journals listed offer a representative cross section of those most likely to be available to t h e average user.

precision controlled hot plates
fast heat-up . . . temperatures to 7 0 0 ° F (371 °C) two sizes: 12 x l 2 and 12 x24 Here are the new THERMOLYNE hot plates that combine the soundest new developments in heat ing apparatus with the reliability of time-proved principles. They fea ture precision control of operating temperatures, yet have the stamina for continuous hard use. An all-new control unit provides close, stepless control of tempera ture from 10° above ambient to 700°F. This is accomplished with a special combination of thermostatic control and unique contact action. Desired temperature is held within plus or minus 5°F regardless of wide fluctuations in line voltage or ambient temperature. Other advanced and high-quality features include fast heat-up . . . cast aluminum top plate that heats uniformly over entire area... nickelchromium heating elements em bedded in specially compounded re fractory plates.. .perforated stain less steel case for free circulation of cooling air.. .easily read control dial.. .neon pilot light. Models available for both 115 volt and 230 volt operation. Two sizes: 12" χ 12", $70...12" χ 24", $105. Write for literature and name of nearest dealer.
