Think thiols. Control length of polymer chains.

Mercaptans h a v e long been used a s chain transfer agents to modify free radical polymerization reactions in the production of rubber a n d plastic products. They have a w a y of letting molecular chains of elastomers or plastics grow to a preset limiting range, cutting off the chains, a n d starting n e w ones. Dodecyl mercaptans are extensively used a s modifiers in making SBR rubber, polystyrene, ABS terpolymers, polyacrylates a n d methacrylates, a s well a s other vinyl polymers. Thiols a n d their derivatives have a talent for the u n u s u a l . They often impart special characteristics... selective solubility; reactivity; t h e r m a l stability; a n d

herbicidal, fungicidal and insecticidal activity. Nature made organosulfurs unique. Pennwalt makes them plentiful, in a range of alkyl mercaptans from Q through C18. We're the world's leading producer. We also have some interesting polymercaptans which you'll find worth investigating. Our continuing research, new products, new applications, and odor-control service are the reasons why, "When you want mercaptans, check with the leader...Pennwalt." Write for Bulletin S-222B.
